I know this should go under medicines, but I'm in a hurry to get info.

Has anyone heard or know of bipolar meds causing trace amounts of THC in your system. My husband had a random test yesterday and is 14 over the allowable limit. He has not consumed marijuana in any way in over a year and has the drug tests to prove this. However, he had his first test since starting his meds yesterday and now he has to pay $250 to have it tested again for further inspection because of the outcome. If it comes out the same he will lose his job. I just need to know if this happend with bipolar meds and how do I get proof.

Thanks

I have done some searching and came up empty. I am sure that you told the lab all the meds he is on. I have found that some meds do have the same chemistry as other meds, and drugs. Has he been around anyone smoking marijuana? that could be the reason. I wish I could've been more help but I doubt the medicine companies want that kind of info to be known lol. Sorry for the lack of help

He did tell the tech about the meds he is on. He hasn't been around any form of marijuana is a really long time. He was tested a year ago when he started this job and has been tested randoly 3 or 4 times since then, all negative. He is currently on his way to his dr to have another test done so if his job lets him go we have something to fall back on and leverage with.

THanks for your help!

Hi, I went and did a quick interaction check on the two, I have a crazy question for you, has he consumed anything recently with poppy seeds? I have heard in the past that they can cause a THC reading to come up. Also does he have friends that smoke pot? being around them he could have inhaled the smoke, also,if he were around someone that does, they could have made cookies, brownies etc that had pot in them.

Here's what drugs.com had to say

Drug interaction results for the following 2 drug(s):

ziprasidone (Geodon)

escitalopram (lexapro)

Interactions between your selected drugs

ziprasidone and escitalopram (Moderate Drug-Drug)

MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.

MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.

Hi,

I have taken both Geodon and Lexapro for a long time now. Have had drug screens and never had a problem with THC showing. That is really odd that he would test out like that. I would have to agree with Carmen in the area of it being ingested with food or maybe just being in the presence when someone is smoking it.

I hope that things work out for him.....

Sounds like there could be some dishonesty here. It may be possible that your husband smoked a doobie with the boys and got caught. Breathing second hand smoke is called "passive inhalation" and this would not cause a positive test result. With cannabis, they test for a drug called "delta 9". This is one of the fourteen chemicals in pot smoke and this one hides in your fat cells for up to thirty days. If your husband even took a couple hits on a joint a couple weeks ago that probably would not show. But for him to test positive, this means that he has been "SMOKING POT". Sorry to come off in a rash tone but if he hangs around with skunks, he may get the smell on him.
