My 10 year old bipolar son just started play therapy counseling yesterday. His counselor is also bipolar! I was so thrilled to hear that. She will understand him and help me understand him better as well.

Has anyone else had their children in play therapy? How does it work, what do I do? Did it benefit and in what ways?

Jennifer

I know this may sound silly, but my counselor took me back to my childhood with 'play' therapy. It helped me resolve issues from my childhood and I learned the sandbox lessons I'd missed in my early years. I'm more socially acceptable in public because I'm not living in a legalistic form of morality, but a responsible and caring approach.

I think this is a great way for your child to find those skills needed later in life.

Hugs to you and him!

Oh, yes, the benefits of 'play' therapy...

1. It allows the child to interact in whatever bi-polar state they are in and be accepted unconditionally for themselves without guild, but with kind and caring direction towards a healthier or more acceptable approach to the situation.

2. It provides a way for the child to be themselves without criticism.

3. It will give you a better meeting place with your child as you see developmental behavior taking place which allows a more harmonious home life.

OK. Sorry, that's enough. I'm just talking too much tonite! You probably could find better answers than these in a Google Search.

Later...
