I'm worried that my husband will kill himself. He feels trapped. He's contemplating a leave of absence from work. I need to figure out if I can get rid of his gun (legally) even though it's not registered to me. My husband lied to his psychiatrist about having a gun in the house. He is taking Abilify and Wellbutrin for Bipolar 2. Any adivce?

Mensrea, sorry about your situation. If I were you I would not worry about the legality of getting rid of his gun,I would just do it.There is no law against your ( hiding) his gun as far as I know. But even so,its better than the possiable alternitive.See If you could get a relative to "borrow" it untill you feel your husband is stable. If he would not be open to that I would do it when he was gone then if he were to get mad and involve the law you could explain the situation to them and they may have a solution. I'm sure they would understand. I wish I could be of more help,I know how desperate and alone you must feel. Also you might want to call your husbands psychiatrist and inform him, he may be able to do something legally.I'll be thinking of you and hoping for the best. I agree with Marilyn, I would hide the gun, I dont think giving someone else the gun is a good idea, things happen, I wouldnt want to unknowingly give it to an unstable person, but hide it good, bp people are very determined when we get something in our head!! As the spouse of the suicidal person , you are within your legal right to call an ambulance and inform them of his suicidal thoughtsand comments. I wouldnt worry about his job, if he goes into the hospital an emergency FMLA leave would cover him,( and you dont have to tell the job why, you can tell them its stress related etc.) he gets 90 days. and can even get an extension. Keep us posted on how you are doing, hugs and blessings. Kelley
