I have ALWAYS accepted responsibility for my actions. Since my diagnosis, I now understand WHY I did the things that I did and WHY I sometimes want to do inappropriate things. It doesn't relieve me of responsibility, but having the insight as to why I behave the way I do helps me to not hold myself to the impossible standard of being perfect that I have imposed on myself so many times. It assists me in being able to forgive myself and learn from it and move on. It also helps to be able to explain why I did what I did when I am asked about previous inappropriate actions. Not that I am looking for sympathy from others, but I have found that the people I have explained things to appreciate the explanation.

I am so glad for you guys, i just want everyone to be happy and healthy...I self medicated for years...and finally after getting sober and dealing with bipolar disease...I have had to really stop and think about behaviors that I developed that were not healthy...I am still working on them. And so appreciate everyone's opinion, whether I agree with it or not...I will fight for the right for people to express their opinion.

Dear Deephearted Sigh, please forgive yourself...hugs to you for getting help...

Dear Gloria, love you, you are so honest...and I know deep down you are one of the most caring people I have run across...you old softie...

and all of you other wonderful people who have given your honest opinions and shared of your heart and experience...in sharing you make the world a better place...others read this and know that they do have control over their lives...any more thoughts??

Dear Gypsy, I think you are right about some people needing to hit rock bottom, and others see the warning signs and pull up before bottom hits...different people react in different ways.

I think some of the posts when people are acting how to deal with various situations get heated because we see danger there for someone else and want to warn them...that is just my take on it...

I hate to see when people are going to get hurt or in trouble and maybe something I could say or someone else could say might keep them from suffering serious consequences for their actions.

Because in my opinion we are accountable for our actions whether we are bipolar or not..that is part of living as a human amongst other humans.

You all had such great answers that pertain to my situation (see diary). I just found this thread, yes, it's a tad old, but still very informative to what I've experienced.

Who cares whether we SHOULD be held responsible... we ARE held responsible. Ever had a credit card company forgive a manic spree? Or your liver make an exception since you only drink because you're self medicating? I know I try to "prepare" people around me for my slip ups by expressing positive things/ love as much as i can, and joking a lot so i can backpedal (pretend I was joking) when something creepy creeps out. I think people at work think I'm a pretty nice guy (and I am, unless I'm not ocasionally), perhaps a little extreme, but i don't think they generalize me as... you know... Bipolar. People are so intolerant... and they will hold you even more responsible if they "know."

good point, bestican...you are so right. Having to deal with the results of our decisions is part of living in society.

I think your point about the credit card company was great. They sure don't forget the debt from money spent in a manic spending spree. It still has to be paid.

People can be intolerant and cruel. Nothing is sadder than someone having a manic episode and people making fun of them. It pisses me off. My son has been manic and there is nothing funny about it. I was at the emergency room with him and the doctor had ordered Zyprexa stat, he understood. The nurse left and I kept waiting for her to come back. 20 mins later still waiting, so I went and looked down the hall...she was taking a break, I got up in her face and said if you don't give my son the meds ordered for him immediately, you are going to have two bipolar people to deal with, and I am not nearly as nice as he is...needless to say, he got his shot. Sorry, this is so long winded...just that the responsibility for behaviors goes both ways to people who have bipolar and people who don't...

Wow, Norma, great question! I think for the most part, I've taken responsibility for my actions. Having only been diagnosed for a little over a year, I now understand why I did what did over the years; that does not give me an 'out', it just explains. I am still accountable.

Now, even more so, because I have the tools to help me (meds, doctors, knowledge, etc)I think perhaps we are more accountable when we are diagnosed because we know. I have gone into pyschosis; are we accountable then? Depends. Did we get there because we went off our meds? Then we knew better.

I think now that I understand, I've taken more responsiblity for my actions in the past. Too late? Maybe. I've appologized to a few people and explained.

Of course, when I'm depressed, I hold myself accountable for EVERYTHING. LOL

WOOO HOOO! Responsibility (sorry if I am preaching here - had a lot of coffee today!) is a life skill. Too many people think otherwise. Everyone needs a moral code to stand by in order to make this world a better place.
Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
The leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
