Hi Gypsy,

I was reading your information as a group leader and saw that you have children.

I'm thinking about having children in the near future, and I have been dx'd BP. I currently take Effexor, Wellbutrin, Abilify, Lamictal, Ambien, and Ativan when needed.

My question to you is were you diagnosed before you had children? And if so, did you go off of your meds for the pregnancy? Also, did you have a harder time with post pardum depression or psychosis?

Thanks for any input!

Hugs,

Melissa

I have also been recently diagnosed, spent a year on meds- the clearest year of my life and then decided I wanted to try to have a baby. So at the suggestion of my docs I came off all my medications and have been tryin for 8 months to get pregnant. I have days when i want to give up and go back on the meds. and then days when i feel like I can wait it out alittle longer. As far as I know there are no safe medications to take the first 3 months except Zoloft or wellbutrin. But I was told that after the first 3 months I could go back on the lamictal if I felt I needed to. I am in the process now of seeing a fertility doctor. I dont know if any of this helps but I wanted to let you know that someone can relate.

Hey Guys When I was diagnosed with bipolar disease 35 yrs ago I was on lithium, mellaril, Thorazine...and really messed up with the disorder...like staring at the wall all day messed up....this went on for a couple of years....gradually I weaned myself off of the meds...and swore I was going to have kids....tried for 6 more years and finally gave up....Know what when I least expected it I got pregnant and 28 yrs later she is now a Second Lieutenant in the Army...a beautiful, wonderful person....i could have never seen the future, or if I would have I could have never have seen anything this good...so don't ever give up...or think things aren't going to work out. Ok??? Hugs, Norma

Hey Miviem, and etch,

I have 4 kids. I was diagnosed everytime, I had a baby...LOL

They would say, I had depression. They would suggest meds, but I wouldn't go on anything. My moods were pretty crazy, when, I was pregnant. My post partum would last longer, than normal people. I would start cycling really bad after I had the babies. My pms is really bad, when, I am not stable on my meds.

I was still in denial until a year ago. I just got serious about getting treatment for the bipolar last April. So yes, the hormones seem to make my symptoms worse. I got through it, though. I had a lot of support, and a very tolerant fiance...LOL

I am glad, I didn't take meds when, I was pregnant. I don't think, I would feel comfortable with it.I know, now, that their are meds, that you can take.

Etch,I have a 2 yr old, and before, I had her, it had been 5 yrs since, I had had a baby, and I was 35 yrs old. I had been involved in heavy drug use for a couple of years, and was sober, but, worried, that, I would have a hard time getting pregnant. Well, I tried, and tried, and then got worried, that my hormones were unbalanced. So, I went and got some vitamins to help with this. Well shortly after this, I went and got a pregnancy test. It was positive. It turned out that, I got pregnant the in the first month, that, I tried....LOL I freaked out for nothing. So don't worry, or stress yourself out. It will happen.

I have 4, so, I know...LOL

I prayed about it. I think that helped, too.

God Bless,Gypsy
