For anyone that has suffered religious delusions did it cause you to lose or seriously question your faith?

Obviously this is something that happened during my manic episode. Maybe someone can relate, the bible seems a little less credible when you realize that you also thought you could speak to God and have him answer you through songs on the radio.

I can understand where you are coming from...I have had delusions like that when manic...and then after leveling out realized I was a little "out there". I don't think it makes me lose faith...just gives a different perspective.

I often wonder did the saints have visions or were they just delusional. I don't think there is an answer here. Reality is such a slippery slope for me. LOL I am always questioning what is real and what are delusion?? I wish I had an answer for you...just to let you know you are not alone.

Hi, forever, you pose a interesting question, even in a mania or afterwards, I am sure that there are times when you would question what was real and what wasn't. I don't believe though that it should affect your faith/belief, no one can say for certain that the answers we needed to hear at the time were not in those songs that we heard.

Being a alcoholic in recovery, there were many times I had things going on in my life, that the answer came to me from listening to others in a meeting, there was no way that the person speaking could have known what was going on with me, I choose to believe that was God getting me the answers I needed in the best way he could.

Having been where I knew there was someone in charge of this zoo, but not knowing who or what they were and not liking the way that they ran things, I had my doubts about the Bibles validity, but over the course of time, I have come back to my faith.. I see no reason that the Bible could not continue to mean to you what it did before this.

Speak with your religious leader about this. Let him/her know of your questions, they can help you to find the answers you need.

Forever, my wife has been where you are. She has heard the radio and TV talking directly to her. Even to the point of using her name. While this did upset her greatly (this happened several years ago), I can say her faith did not waiver. She questioned herself but not her faith.

Even the deciples when they preached the gospel on the day of pennicost were charged with being delusional, drunk on new wine (grape juice). But we all know that God had a plan in it. As He has a plan for all of us.

I believe that God speaks to us in many ways. Whether through reading of the Bible, a preachers surmon, a song on the radio, or a conversation with Him in prayer.

You are in my prayers.

GOD BLESS

RED

Hi Forever,

I have had manic religious experiences, and I have had real spiritual experiences. I have gotten really delusional where I was casting out bad energy from people. I thought, I could see spirits, and all kinds of stuff.

But all my life, I have had faith, and a belief in god. In fact I used to pray, when, I was going through the mania. I still pray, and meditate, and read the bible sometimes. I read other spiritual books, too.

I believe god works through people. I have heard things on the radio, that, I needed to hear. I feel god puts me in places where I need to be. I believe god picked my new pdoc for me. He is just awesome. He new what to do for me. I have been through a few, and this time I prayed everyday before my appointment.

So, anyway, I think everything we go through, and experience is nessacary for us to learn what we need to learn in our life.

God Bless,Gypsy

Hey guys,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I have always believed in God but I must say that the events during my manic episode left me wondering about many things. I'm sure many of you that have had a psychotic episode can relate to wanting to distance yourself from the delusions that you experienced. It took me a year before I would listen to music again!

Actually I have made it past a lot of different things since that happened but my fear is that it will happen again and I have to be more prepared mentally. Not sure if that is even possible but everything that I was involved with at the time of my mania became part of the delusions I suffered.

I just don't want to be the women on the corner preaching that the world is going to end! Actually that is one of the few things I skipped but it seems reasonable that it could have happened considering my losing total touch with reality.

Hi, forever,

I can relate to what you are saying. I have had some psychotic experiences. They usually were based on religion, and aliens...LOL

I also have a big fear of becoming a bag lady, and being permanently insane.

The fear of being in a straight jacket, and become stuck in a padded cell.

Thank god for meds, and psychiatrist who are there to help us stay away from that. Sometimes those fears can be motivators. Atleast that's what helped me get help. My fears of having another psychotic episode motivated me to get help. I didn't want my kids to see me like, that or lose their mother to this illness.

Hang in there.

God Bless,Gypsy
