I am really struggling with insomnia the last two days and worried it will turn into a manic episode. What can I do to try and get to sleep besides take more klonopin? I would rather not resort to that I have only been on lithium for the last three months and am really worried I might have to go through ANOTHER med change. Any advice?

Unfortunately, bi-polar has no "special combo" of meds that is "guarenteed" to work. Since I have been diagnosed, I think I have been through six med changes (thats just a guesstament). The meds I am on right now seem to be working ok for now. Not perfect but ok. I'll tell you though, if I didn't take my trazadone, clonidine, and seroquel(sp) at night, I would NEVER sleep. It slows my mind down enough to be able to sleep. Is ther any way you can get ahold of your Pdoc to have him or her perscribe something to help with your sleeping? That may be your only option.............Dana

Call your pdoc because bi polar is controlled in part by sleep, too little starts mania, too much starts depression. I know med changes suck. I told my psych yesterday that she was starting to get close to my limit. Meaning if she adds one more med to my regime they is a high chance that I'll stop taking my meds.

Since I was diagnosed and started seeking treatment I have been through so many meds I can't remember them all. But I finally had a doc explain to me that with mood changes come med changes.

again i say CALL YOUR PDOC unless you like not sleeping. I had that problem for awhile so my doctor prescribed me thorazine. All those sleep aids you see advertised on tv such as Roserm sp?, Ambien, and others like that don't work with bipolar people. If you can't get in touch with your doctor or something happens you could always try otc sleep aids. But you can't do it forever you still need to CALL YOUR PDOC.

BE BLESSED!

Have you tried any naturally relaxing techniques such as a warm bath, cammomile tea, relaxtion music or noises such as a fan running in your bedroom?

I think insominia comes with bipolar. Sleeping is very difficult for me especially when I'm traveling for work, which I do a lot. I take a sleep aid prescribed by my pdoc and that helps for the most part when I'm home but when I'm traveling my mind is going too much to really enable me to sleep well. I do what kimmy says, I listen to music, I take a nice hot bath, I make sure I don't have caffeine and I also at times have to take an additional sleep aid. Before you try any sleep aid on your own, call you pdoc and let him know that you're not sleeping and worried that you might go into a manic phase and what would he/she recommend. I just came home from a trip and during it, I had to call my pdoc to make sure that an over the counter sleep aid would be ok to take and would I still take the meds I normally take to simmer me down and sleep. I've accepted that before I try anything on my own with any other medications, even over the counter, that it's best to check with my pdoc before I do so.

Hello I did some research for you on different kinds of insomnia. Some of the main points were that insomina could be caused by stress, depression. This is a quote from my source.

http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp? articlekey=17762

" The perception or complaint of inadequate or poor-quality sleep because of one or more of the following: difficulty falling asleep; waking up frequently during the night with difficulty returning to sleep; waking up too early in the morning; or unrefreshing sleep.

Insomnia is not defined by the number of hours of sleep a person gets or how long it takes to fall asleep"

Sending Blessings

BE BLESSED!
