Hi!

I was diagnosed with bi-polar spectrum. I have never heard of this. I was put on lamictil and wellbutrin. After being on this for a few months, I was soo depressed I didn't want to get out of bed. My desire to do anything was completely gone. After reading some of the stories on the site, I'm not sure I am bi-polar. Has anyone else ever been misdiagnosed? Or heard of bi-polar spectrum? I am rreally confused!! thanks,

kaye

You belong...Welcome...even if you are not bipolar you are welcome to post here....it is for everybody...I am not sure what bipolar spectrum is but, if you have depression and mania..you might be bipolar...that just means that your range of emotions sometimes goes out of the range that is considered normal(whatever that is??)

Bipolar disease is characterized by the brain's secreting serotonin and other chemicals that regulate brain activity...sometimes it is too much, not enough, who knows...it is a real problem because it affects how we think....like diabetes it sometimes needs medication to function properly...there are no medical tests at this time...just observation of the person and their behaviour....

kaye, welcome to the group! YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE. Lots of caring people here, both those with bipolar and those of us with a loved one that has bipolar.

Misdiagnosis is possible, the diagnosis is based on what you tell the psychiatrist and what the psychiatrist sees in your behavior and emotional states. I know of a few here that have started out with other dignosis's and the diagnosis has evolved as time went on.

Glad you are here, as Norma said... this forum is open to everyone.

Feel free to ask questions, leave answers, vent and make friends.

We are here for you, You Are Not Alone!

God Bless

Your meds might need adjustment...if you are feeling depressed a lot, call doctor and tell how you are feeling....meds that are working properly should make you feel stable, not too high not too low...mid range...

I remember that i was put on anti-depressants a few years ago when i was first being treated (They believed i was just depressed). They made me so much worse and I've gone through many drugs but i finally found one that works for me, its a mood stabilizer called Lamictal. i guarantee with trial and error you'll find the right drug for you and you'll feel worlds better! Just be patient and hang in there, its worth it. :]

Kaye, the bipolar spectrum is the range for bipolar, not a diagnosis, I'm not sure exactly where it starts but I believe it is with bipolar depression and goes up to bipolar 1, with all the different ranges in between, kinda like your gas gauge, empty to full, and all the ranges in between, there is Bipolar NOS, which is bipolar Not Otherwise Specified, Bipolar II, which is what I am, and then the Bipolar 1, which is the one most people associate with the bipolar illness, where they have the major mania's.. these are the bipolar spectrum..

Being so depressed isn't right, you need to see your doctor about it, a med change or adjustment sounds like it it in order..

Zombie, I too was diagnosed with depression, treated with Antidepressants, and i got worse too, they are thinking now adays that bipolar people should not be treated on anti's alone.. a mood stabilizer like Lamictal needs to be in place and can be used in conjunction with a antidepressant like Welbutrion, Making the diagnosis of bipolar isn't a easy one, as most folks don't see the doctor on their own when they are in a mania, just when they are in the downside of it.

The lamictal is doing wonders for me too..

Hi kaye,

Welcome. Bipolar apectrum is a form of soft bipolar. I read a book on soft bipolar, before, and it talked about less extreme forms of bipolar.

Anyway, Here is a link, i found that has info on this.

You are welcome no matter what is going on.

WOW!!! Thank you all for such warm welcomes!!! It has been amazing!! It feels like I just wrapped myself up in a nice, new fluffy, warm blanket!! All the responses have been soo helpful. Do you know if there is anyone who has mild bi-polar symptoms that has told their story? I guess I am trying to compare my symptoms with someone else as a sort of self-diagnosis. I have seen two doctors. One who says I am bi polar spectrum and one who says I am not bi-polar. I just found out my grandmother on my mothers side was bi-polar and I know my youngest 1/2 brother is. They both also suffer/ed from OCD. I know somethings just not right with me but I can't seem to figure out what it is.

I would follow my instinct...if you are bipolar and it is mild, therapy is helpful...also knowing the signs of when there are problems...and keep posting here...althoug we are not medical authorities...we are people who are familiar with this disease.

And very willing to share with you...and you can help others....
