hi, my husband is bipolar and his dr. has him on 60mgs of Geodon and I hate it! He can't sit still is always up "looking" for his medicine or phone numbers. Nothing he talks about makes any sense...it's like the last month has all ran together. He is very forgetful, like when I say something he forgets it a second later. It's like this medicine is making him into a whacky person...I feel helpless and I'm not sure how long I can live with someone like this?? AND when he finally falls asleep, it's impossible to wake him....anyone else going through some of the same? Is this normal?? He is also taking prozac, xanax and cogentin....

Hi ycleaver. My son takes 100mgs of Geodon along with 1500mg of Depakote. I've noted that when we increased his meds on the Geodon, he became somewhat more manageable. That's saying a lot since there are three of us with bipolar living under the same roof. The only draw back I've seen has been that he is rather difficult to get up in the morning. When he first started on the meds, he actually feel asleep at school during class and they couldn't get him up. Once it stablized and he got used to it, it's been a lot easier. Just a suggestion but you may want to talk to his doctor when he goes for the next appointment to discuss alternatives or to see if maybe cutting back on the dosage would help. I know my son has tried several meds and this seems to be the first that has really been able to help him. I wish you luck! Red

Hi,

I tried Geodon, and I only made it 3 days. I couldn't stay awake and got really shakey on it and got sick.

I would call his doctor and tell them about this. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I research every med I take, as I take them. There are a lot of web sites you can go to. MedMD.com, and many more.

There are alot of meds out there besides Geodon for mania. Ask your husbands doctor about some other ones he can take. I hope this helps...God bless, Gypsy

thank you all for your messages...we went to the doctor today and he decreased his amounts from 60mg to 40 a day...I sure hope this helps, it's very stressful for my son and I to watch him go through all of this....and then to have him(my hubby) be upset with me today for calling his doctor and explaining to him what is going on!! My husband says it's none of my business and I was out of line by calling his doctor??!! How long do you think it will take before I see a change with this new decrease in meds??

Hi,

It seems to be different for each person, but, for me it was about a week to two weeks for each med I tried. Sometimes we have to keep trying different meds, to see which meds work the best. Keep communicating with his doctor about his progress, and they will keep adjusting each one as they add a different ones.

Its trial and error. I am on 4 different meds. Its a balancing act. We bipolars have two or three sides to us a manic, a mixed mania, and a depressive side, and they all have to be addressed. So, there you are, I hope this gives you a little more info. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Thanks, Gypsy

I was on Geodon for 10 days, only 20 mg per day. By the end, I was in a full blown mania and in a worse state than when I started. Other side effects (for me) were hallucinations, insomnia and a migraine-like headache that lasted about 2 weeks. Geodon binds to plasma Albumin and so it has a half-life. My headache lasted 14 days total, the time it took to clear.

You say he takes Xanax, too? You might make sure there's no drug interaction there. You can't take Geodon with for anything used for sleep. Technically speaking Xanax is a benzodiazepene antianxiety agent and not a sleep drug.

I'd asked a pharmacist about drug interactions and he thought Melatonin (used for sleep) and Geodon was a bad idea. He said to NEVER mix homeopathics with psychotropics.

My doctor told me that psychotropics are all trial and error and the drug effect varies from person to person. Geodon didn't work for me, but it might work for someone else.

I've also been told Lamictal is a good drug. If I start getting Lithum toxicity again, that is the next drug of choice.
