Why is it people with Bipolar take epilepsy meds for it?

because that's what the drugs are.

I've had epilepsy for 44 yrs.

What meds are for epilepsy? Have you ever looked at what cause epilepsy, bipolar, and tourettes. They all start in lack of/too much chemicals produced by the brain. my guess is that the meds you are talking about work for both diseases because they are close in the brain.

that is the exact reason pixie. I took Lyrica, which is a med for fibro, for the neuropathy in my legs & feet. Most of the prescription drugs we take have dual medical uses.

I take Tegretol, which it's common use was for epilepsy. It is now being used for Bipolar disorder also. I was put on that after the depakote was taken away because of too much weight gain. But if I remember correctly, depakote is also used for epilepsy.

While on the subject of meds I have a question. I may be getting back on meds and was wondering which Bipolar meds to stay away from cause of weight gain.

Hi y'all,

Welcome Belinda. I take Lamictal, and its an anti convulsant, too.

I am concidering try Trileptal, again. There is supposed to be a link between bipolar, and epilepsy. My pdoc said she thought, I might be having emosional seizures, when, I described what my cycles feel like.

Pixie, There are alot of meds, that don't cause weight gain. I went on a hunt for them. Topamax, trileptal,Geodon, Lamictal, Welbutrin.

These are a few. i might have left something out.

God Bless,Gypsy

Thanks. When I go to the hospital I think they will try meds again. Its been two years since I have taken anything. I am going in for the eating disorder and don't want to put on weight worse than already. I don't think I am underweight but just don't want things to be worse.
