Hey: I am going crazy with my 17 yr old. He took himself of his meds last May and has progressively gotten worse. Of course, he doesn't see that. He has dropped out of school, smokes pot, out of control in every way. I turned him into the juvenile courts and filed a petition against an unruly child. That was my protection on the truancy board at the school. He has refuse to retake the GED 2 times. Almost had to call the police Fri nite because he came home drunk at 2:00 in the am. I am so stressed out over him. I hate it when he comes home, he makes me nervouse because I never know what he is going to do. He is always angry and flies off the handle at everything and cusses everyone out. He is just plain mean. At least when his brother would get that way, I knew it was the meds not working or he would calm down soon. This just gets worse. Any suggestions on what I can do? Part of me wants him to get arrested so he knows that he CAN get into trouble. tdc

Hey tdc....no pat answers here, but in my opinion you had better set some house rules......set a time when the house will be locked for the night. Then make sure that they ARE!!! Change the locks if he has a key he won't return to you. Say 10:00pm or whenever. When that time comes....lock er up!! If he comes home drunk & trying to get in....NOW..... call the cops!!! Girlfriend, it's about time for you!! Get yourself some help. You are going to have to have some help with coping with all of that. You have totally lost control of your own home. Either help youself now or you are lost...OR...just wait til he turns 18 and OUT he goes!!! By the way, welcome to our humble home away from home. Hope you find some comfort here.

Hi there,

I have been that 17yrold!!!. My mom put me in treatment. They kicked me out. They set down ground rules. But, I went untreated until, I was 32 yrsold. I would protect yourself, and don't enable him. If you need to call the cops, to protect you and your family, then you might have to. It is his illness, not him. Unless he is made accountable for his actions he wont stop.

God Bless,Gypsy

hey tdc, letting him get locked up might be the best thing you can do for him, as long as you continue to let him get by with stuff, the longer it is going to take him to realize that there are consequences to his actions.. You do not have to live in fear in your own home, like Glory suggested, give him house rules he is to live by as long as he is under your roof, and if he can't deal with it, then he can move on, in most states by 16 the child can do about anything they want too, find out what age it is at in your state.
