I've had lots of jobs that have all ended due to my bi-polar. Back in July my lithium level went way up after I started taking 4 new meds (topamax, chantix, ally & benicar for high blood pressure)I went out on short term disability in November and here we are in March and things still don't feel right. The side effects of the meds are worse than before July and I just don't tolerate them well. I have had 3 interviews and cried thru the whole thing each time. I'm at the point of applying for SS disablity but don't know much about it. I stay depressed because of money then when my husband does get paid I get manic until all the money is gone. I'm a mess and need help before I sink.

Welcome rkc, My name is Norma and I have bipolar disorder. It is difficult to try to work when your meds aren't quite right. Are you working with your Pdoc closely?? I would tell the doc that I am not able to function. You might want to let your husband manage the money til you are more stable...I don't want to preach. We here are just other people who are bipolar or friends or spouses. And there are lots of people here to talk to.

Hi rkc,

Welcome. I am glad you found us. I ran into the same situation, accept it was my bipolar getting too severe. I tried for 5 yrs to get, and keep a job, and finally dropped into the worst depression, I have ever hit. I am filing for disability. You just call up the social security office, and ask how to apply. You can do it over the phone, and the computer, too.

I agree with Norma. I would tell your pdoc what's going on so you can get stable.

Anyway, feel free to vent, share, and ask questions. There are alot of very supportive people here.

God Bless,Gypsy

Hi, Rkc, welcome to the group, it's hard when you are not stable to find a job, much less keep it, work with your doctor till you can find something that works, go ahead and apply for your disability, as it takes a while before it kicks in, that will give you some time to see if you and your doctor can come up with something that will keep you stable.

I am 24 and had a big problem going to work everyday. Couldn't keep up to there schedule some days. Then I grew a tolerance to meds and was taken off them. I applied for SSD and got it first try with no lawyers and it took about 3 months. I waited longer on their doc to send in paperwork than anything. If you have any questions just ask. Maybe I can help.

Wow, you were lucky Pixiedust, especially at your age. I'll let you know, I am going to file next month. I have been bipolar for 23 years now. I've worked several jobs long term the rest were less than 3 years. I have always had a problem with thinking that my boss was out to get me, probs with coworkers etc. Did you have a long history of BP?

I was dxed about 6 years ago now that I know what it is I have been affected for like 11 or 12 at least. I really noticed when I started high school in 9th grade. Iwas incredibly lucky but I have tons of medical stuff in the last 6 years. I have had a good 50,000 dollars in hospital bills. I started paying for my insurance when I still lived at home. So my medical bills started when I was still in high school during my senior year.

Pixie, my wife was diagnosed 8 years ago, she got her SSD first time through with no lawyers too. She was in a really bad way at the time.

Thats good! Its kind of sad, my dad knows a guy who can't work cause of his back and hes been out of work. He tried and was declined twice and is appealing again. Unless its mental you have a hard time it seems.
