My brother, diagnosed with BPD about 5 yrs ago, was recently put on anti-depressants along with his BPD meds. I thought he had been doing okay...he is in college and taking regular classes. Several days ago, he decided that he wants to quit school. He is in his last semester getting his Associate's degree. Although I don't know what he'll do with the degree, it is a degree and a great accomplishment for him. He has 3 months to keep going to class. How do I convince him to stay in school and just wait it out 3 more months? Or should I? I don't know if he's thinking clearly b/c of the new meds, but I don't know what to say or do to help. I want him to be the best he can be, and I know he can do school. He's smart. Any advice????

i dont know what you can say, but i really hope you can find away to encourage him to stay. one of my bigger regrets is quitting school, i was carying a very high average and left and regret it to this day

Hi, hank. Thanks, I know...to me, quitting school is a huge mistake. However, I don't want to put pressure on him if it isn't due. But I've heard that it's hard to go back to school after quitting. He thinks he wants to work fulltime in the food industry. It's difficult to support him if I feel that quitting is a poor choice.

In your life, has quitting school truly impacted the way you live? I really would like my brother to stay in school, but ultimately I just want him to be happy. Again, thanks for everything.

there have been numerous closed doors to me for jobs i am fully capable of doing but dont have that required slip of paper for. in some instances i have managed to get good jobs, but only after years of "experiance" earned in a very low paying atmosphere.

Hi musicteacher,

Can you sit down and try to talk to him? If it doesn't work, than you did your best.

God Bless,Gypsy

I'm with Gypsy, try talking with him, and impress upon him he only has three more months to go, and then he can go and do anything he wants, and should he need it he will have that "piece" of paper to fall back on.. I quit school at 16, did pretty well most of the time, then I moved to South Carolina, and could not even put in a application to answer a phone, because I didn't have a high school diploma, had to go back at the age of 37 to get a GED, mind you I had 21 years of office experience.
