Hi Candice,

I was on lithium for years. Never was good. A few years back my Doc took me off the lithium high-ball(lithium with an antidepressent and an antimanic drugs) and put me on Effexor 100 mg a day with Flexeril 10 mg at night. Effexor works on the depression and the mania and therefor stabilizes both. The Flexeril helps with sleep. I know of several people on this combination and are doing well. Everyone is different but if the lithium doesn't help, you might want to discuss this with your Doc.

Hope I helped and hang in there.

I am also taking Lithium and it helps with my manias but the side effects are terrible. I can't do anything creatively, even something as simple as coming up with good conversation. My memory is terrible and I can't comprehend things like books and movies/tv programs. Do either of you experience anything like that or has anyone reading this ever had that? I seem to be the only one I have ever come in contact with that has had this kind of reaction to it...

HI Candice....

Was that 6 Days or 60 in your post.

either way i have 15 years of just lithium and it can work for you...i find keeping busy a better part of the day is helpful.

What is your dose and which Lith are you taking...

i find to cure what you are experiencing ie the up and down, to best be treated with Lithium Carbonate ER(Extended Release) 300 mg....Sounds like you are taking just lithium carbonate. 900 mg minimum to keep a theraputic value....

Can Chat anytime

I also take lithium...I don't know if it effects my creativity, I am pretty creative.

As far as the comprehension thing goes, I know just what you are talking about. I can't read books anymore. My attention span is 0

i have horrible trouble reading and writing with my abilify. with lithium, i had to go off it because it was so bad i couldn't read or write at all. my pdoc now has me on Ritalin to help with the concentration and reading and writing thing. it's helping when i have to force myself to read and write for work, but i used to read about 4 books a week for pleasure, and that's just impossible now. i miss it very much, but can't justify going off the med that has basically saved my life. my creativity is also shot. i used to do a lot of artistic things. with the abilify, i just don't feel the urge, the inspiration or the motivation. it makes me very sad.

I have taken lithium for 25 years and experienced all the above. At times it really seems to work well but when it's not working it's really bad. My pdoc never seems excited about taking me off and trying something new- she once mentioned Abilify but decided to wait. I call my meds the dah mixture since i always have that dah effect.
