we all know lithium affects appetite, right. caffeine affects appetite too. so when we say mood stabilizer does that mean normal serotonin not too high and too low. does that also mean we have normal sleep, mood and appetite as well. caffeine influences serotonin, but only temporarily and it also interferes with lithium. if yoy read your prescription drug handbooks and look under lithium one of the things it says to do is dont take caffeine while on lithium or you will get intensified side effects. does water also prevent side effects as well. some interesting points i made here.

My pdoc for such a long time has been telling me to cut out the caffine. I was drinking the 1/2 decaf 1/2 regular coffee, and would have 2 so that equals 1 real coffee/day.

I'm not sure if water prevents side-effects. I drink quite a bit of water/day and I still have side-effects, but I also eat sugar in my diet and i'm sure that's not very good.

black555, wow, thank you cause you're making me think about the "important things" in life this evening. Smile

When someone has bipolar, there is no such thing as "normal" mood since moods can fluctuate into mania or depression. I've read that eliminating caffeine from one's diet can definitely improve mood and lessen the possibility of a person experiencing anxiety, nervousness and agitation.

I highly doubt that water prevents side effects. If it did, pdocs would be advising all of their patients (particularly those on Lithium) to drink as much of it as they can to avoid them.

Yep caffeine makes me really anxious so it's easy to get a panic attack. Eliminating caffeine feels better too.

Neondreams, I don't know that all of those with Bipolar Disorder do not have times when they are euthymic. I know that I am in that state now.

Most go from manic to either depression and somewhere either between the mania and depression they are "normal" ie in a good balanced mood. Neither Depressed or manic/hypomanic.

Mixed states with a good reaction to the right meds, can well be euthymic.

Those on Lithium need to drink lots of water, ie Lithim levels can get too high.

WATER - I have intensively researched Lithium and believe drinking water is beneficial for our long term well-being, espescially the kidneys.

Put simply, if you have a greater amount of water flushing through your system, it follows that it is likely that less residual chemical will be retained in the kidneys.

Any health advisor will recommend 2 litres (or more)a day for anyone.

Our kidneys can tolerate up to 6 litres a day.

Of course you can drink liquids other than water (fruit etc. counts too).

[Even if you disagree, drinking water is harmless!]
