I am wondering if anyone else is noticing News about mental illness increasing. The recent reports of Britney Spears, the shooter at the Illinois College a few days ago all are disturbing me. I am wondering if there is more of an awareness of this or if there are just more occurances. Is the news becoming sensitive to the issue of mental illness? I was just wondering if anyone else had some thought on this idea.

Nvice-

I was just talking about this with my mom today. I think that we, as a society, are probably equally at risk, or even less so, then were people living 100+ years ago. Also, we in the USA have much less to worry about than most of the rest of the world. Just the fact that we have access to networks talking about BP is one example of our advantage in the US. We do not have to worry daily about finding enough food to eat, whether the soldiers occupying our cities will rape our children, or that we will be killed for expressing our religious beliefs. We do not live in cities where the average head of household age is less than 10 years of age due to AIDS.

I also think that the media continues to sensationalize bad behavior because it sells. How much coverage did Angelina Jolie get when she got her pilots license and purchased a plane to fly food into areas of Africa hardest hit by famine? How many Americans know this? Now, how many Americans know about Brittany Spears antics, or Pamela Anderson's boob size?

Add to this that more people die each year from tobacco than from shootings, and we really are worrying about the wrong things. The media is playing on "The Big Bad Wolf" factor with the school shootings. Please do not misinterpret me, they are tragic and sad and frightening and dreadful. My point is, though, that they are very, very rare. We are generally safe at our schools, and the terrible exceptions to this are still exceptions. I know this does not minimize the loss that communities and families feel in the wake of such events. The numbers lost, however, are miniscule compared to tobacco, DUI, and obesity related deaths.

WHOA Nelly!!!! Deep thinkers here. Between having BP disorder and being old (lol) I am lucky to remember my own name. Let alone care what Anjolina what's her name is doing. However, I missed the part about what she did or is doing for the hungry and abused kids here in the good old US of A. Could you please repeat that part? Thanx

Gloria

NVice, I think the more publication, the more understanding and sympathetic the American people get to the plight of us with the diorder. There probably isn't any more of it, but now it is not so hush hush and offensive to Mr & Mrs ALL American to see it written & reported about. At least that's what I am hoping.

Love

Gloria

Hey Norma, I have seen a increase on the News about the mental health issues, but I am afraid it is just like J5 was saying, for the media, they would not report on it if it wasn't for Brittney or any of the others, remember all the news coverage of Paris Hilton and her drunk driving? I would love to see the media actually give air time to those of us who fight for the information about these disorders. Maybe then there would not be such a stigma about it.

carmen, you are so right. Watching Brittney's battle, was painful. I have been manic and had to be taken to the hospital. It hurt to watch her. My sweet son has been there too. That is why i tell anyone who wants to listen, i am bipolar. i don't hide it. Perhaps, the news coverage can help shine light in this dark corner of our society giving courage to those who are bipolar to speak up. I think there are many people out there who are bipolar and are too afraid to speak up and get help. Years ago cancer had a great deal of social stigma attached to it. People called it waste away. true story. In an ideal world, one which i beleive is possible, each of us has to speak up, regardless of the ramifications. Here i am getting on my soap box, but I think that this is important. Funding for research and treatment of mental illness will only happen if people realize that the mentally ill are not just the people in the news who exhibit bizarre and criminal behavior, they are those around you who struggle daily.

Stay on your soapbox, and I will drag mine up beside yours, Gloria was right too about helping those that are starving here in America, yes we are considered the land of plenty, but there are so many that do without.. with the budget cuts for the mentally ill, there are those now living on the streets, without the treatment they so desperately need.

The Drug companies rule the health care here in America, you can go to Canada, buy the very same drugs that are made here and shipped there at a 1/3 to 1/2 of the price of them here.. In Mexico you can buy antibiotics over the counter..at a 1/3 of the price.. and I would not be surprised that they were made here, I have hidradenitis, and there is very little if any research being done on it, because it is classified as a Rare and Orphaned disease.. no money to be made in curing it according to the drug companies...

I am afraid with the Brittney happenings all that is going to be done by the news is to shine the worst possible light on the illness..
