Mods or anyone else who would know... I have some insecurities which I am trying to overcome. I read through the mdjunction groups directory but didn't really find anything specific to overcoming insecurities... can anyone recommend a mdj group?

Specifically I was raised extremely conservative. In my parents home the subject of sex was taboo. you didn't talk about it, sexual jokes weren't told and if it came on a movie - you fast forwarded that part. As an adult I find myself feeling very akward if the subject of sex is brought up. Even if one of my friends says a joke - my insecurity is so bad I will leave the room! I recognize that this shouldn't happen - I can talk about any other subject on earth intelligently and without emotion.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to recalibrate my mind so that I can enjoy being with my friends regardless of what subjects they choose to talk about. Any help, group suggestions, book ideas, etc would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi brighamr, I see you are fairly new to MdJunction and want to welcome you to our site. I am not sure why you decided to post your question in the bipolar group but wanted to add some input. Smile MdJunction has a Self Esteem and Positive Thinking Group that may be able to help build a strong sense of self so you can feel comfortable talking about any subject. I would also recommend reading articles about how healthy sex can be an important part of your quality of life. Good luck!

Hi Ms,

I've been a member of the BP group for a while which is why I posted here - to be honest I don't know much about MDJ other than this group Wink

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll check out the positive thinking group.

It's a great group!
Not a psychiatrist (pdoc) nor a therapist...what you read are my thoughts and there you go.

My mind is like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

I was going to suggest that group too! Great minds and all that.Wink

Do you see a therapist? Because I think it would also be a great subject to look into with a therapist. I also did an internet search and my mind is boggled by how many books are out there about dealing with anxiety. They never tell you as much in those little internet blurbs as the actual dust jacket though so I would hit a library or a bookstore. Maybe a book on dealing with social anxiety?

Deciding to take charge of the anxiety and try to reckon with it is a big step. Kudos to you for venturing out to take it.
