MDJunction to me

tomboykimi"What MD Junction means to me is a place where i can feel like im not alone. As someone with something as rare as hydrocephalus, it feels like im the only one in the world with it. When i came to MD, its like everyone has it. It doesnt feel like im alone. And that people need to hold up a sign to say what i have, because people know. And they understand. I can get questions answered from people who have been through it rather than from doctors or people who only can tell you from a physical standpoint. THat is what MD junction means to me." I was diagnosed as bipolar 2 when I was 22. I took medication for awhile, but kept going off of it without consulting a doctor. In March of this year I had, for me, a severe manic episode and have been struggling to get the right medications since then. They started with Saphris and klonopin. I didn't like the Saphris at all. It made me feel like a zombie for 12+ hours a day. Recently I admitted myself to a hospital to get more help and they prescribed Lithium (now up to 900mg/day.), Klonopin and today I was given prozac because I can't seem to get out of a depressed state. From everything I have seen, it is dangerous to mix prozac and lithium. Does anyone else take this combination?

I don't think it is dangerous if your psychiatrist prescribed this combo to you, I hear Prozac is very good for some people who suffer depression. I've been taking Lithium and Klonopin form many yrs they are both very good meds, I wish you all the best.

Well, I have an opinion (perhaps it's best to keep to myself). Lithium therapy (the dose) is designed to keep your blood level within the therapeutic range (0.6-1.2). Klonopin (clonzepam) is a benzodiazepene (sp?) that has the longest half-life of any of those in that family.

Prozac is a selective-seratonin-reuptake-inhibitor (Abbreviated SSRI). Personally (now this is ME), Prozac was not effective. I tried Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor, Trazadone, Zoloft...and possibly one or two others (I forgot my Alzheimer's pill lol).

There is an over-the-counter product called SAM-E, and apparently it has some of the same characteristics as Prozac.

If you have a pdoc who is willing to work with you, the options are so many now (Cymbalta is a big one advertised now).

Personally (now this is ME, not YOU), I find diet, exercise and enjoying a good massage now and then calms me and helps with mood, too. If you have a partner with whom you are involved, perhaps adding touching and having more love-making sessions will help.

So many of the drugs serve to chemically castrate (sp?) we males. I do not know if it has a similar effect on females.

But I do know that people with healthier and happier sex lives are naturally less depressed.

Diagosed with bipolar in 1985, I'm learning to deal with it better since finding my "family" at Alcoholics Anonymous, and as of 1/3/2013, I will have one year of sobriety and more clarity than I've ever experienced in my lifetime.

Prozac and lithium do not mix. Prozac increases the lithium levels in the blood and can be dangerous. I was on both for a while and had to be taken off prozac and put on celexa for that reason.

That is what I read earlier today. I haven't actually taken the Prozac yet and am apprehensive. I want to believe that she wouldn't have prescribed the combination if it can be dangerous, but I suppose it could be a really horrible oversight. :-/

Well I was on lithium at a high dose and Prozac at max dose ... No problems ever????? I loved the Prozac because it kind of gifted me with hypomania frequently! But now I was switched to cymbalta and taken off the Prozac - but just because cymbalta helps (supposedly) with fibromyalgia. Most important thing I think is that I had monthly lithium level checks and some less frequent organ function testing. If you are concerned (which after these responses I might be) talk to your doc and switch- there are many anti-depressant options. Best wishes!

My doctor told me that the Prozac was only a temporary thing and that because I am on such a low dose of it that I shouldn't experience any problems. Fingers crossed that she's right.

Thanks everyone. Smile
