I currently go to a meeting once a week and have for over a year now. I was curious if anyone else goes to meetings that are Bipolar or Depression related. It can be a great source of support and they are in almost every city in the country.

I would be interested in going to a meeting. I need to find out where they meet in my area.
Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor

When I was hospitalized in December, a social worker gave me the names of several DBSA support groups in my area. I've been meaning to call them, but keep forgetting. I'm glad I saw this thread because now I can make a mental and physical note to myself.

scooby,

Generally speaking, how large are DBSA support groups? Are they large or small? If large, I think I'll stick to MDJ because I get manic and nervous whenever I'm around alot of people.

I know you asked Scooby this question neondreams, but they vary in size. I have a choice between two meetings a week. Tuesday nights are about ten people and Thursdays are anywhere from 10- 20.

It has definitely helped me with my Social Anxiety and I've developed nice friendships and a support system. It's something to go to a group every week, no matter how you feel and you are accepted. Everyone there has been what you are going through and understands. There are times that you feel the same way with new people who have just been diagnosed and it's their first meeting.

I would highly recommend it for everyone.

misssunflower,

10-20 people sounds like an awful lot. I don't think I could handle being around that many people. I also have 7 different types of paranoia that mostly center around people. I'm afraid of becoming manic or severely paranoid if I attend a group meeting of that size. Perhaps I'll call the leaders of my local DBSA support groups to find out how large they are. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll only have 3 or 4 people. On second thought, I could have my niece come with me to meetings. She's always supported me when it comes to my bipolar (and was the one who helped me when I needed it most during my first manic/psychotic episode), so I'm sure she wouldn't mind going.

Just an FYI, a lot of people have family members go with them the first time. I encourage you to talk to your local facilitator about the meetings as well. Good luck!

Will do. I've already written myself a note to call them tomorrow or definitely on Monday.
