I have been on SSDI for bipolar 1 for over a year now. I was approved the first time around. I received approval 5 months after my application. I used an SSDI lawyer first time around because that is what a lawyer friend of my husband's best friend suggested. The process of applying was relatively easy. The lawyer did most of the work. I just filled out a few forms and provided a work history, my meds, hospital and outpatient records, and doctor contact info (and maybe something else I'm not remembering). I'm not sure how the application works if you do it yourself. I know the doctors provided info to the lawyer who passed it on to SSDI.
Bipolar 1, Simple Partial Seizures, and migraines

Psychiatric meds:

Lithium ER (900 mg)*Tegretol XR (1400 mg)*Lamictal (100 mg)*Geodon (160 mg)*Navane (5 mg)*Seroquel XR (100 mg)*Klonopin (.5 mg)

Ativan 1 mg "as needed" (I rarely take it.)*Seroquel regular 50 mg "as needed" (Only if I'm getting elevated.)

Other meds:

Propranolol (40 mg)*Levothyroxine (150 mcg)

My mix is side effect friendly for me.

I'm an Advocate

I have been on SSI since Sept. 2003, I applied for it myself and was approved the first time. It only took about 3 months to get approved. I was given the longest time that they offer between recertifications which is 7 years. I was recertified in 2010 and will have to recertify again in 2017. The recertification process was very easy, it was just a phone call from a case worker who asked me a few questions.
I am not a professional, any and all advice that I give is based solely on personal experiences and is not intended to take the place of a medical or mental health professional.
My diagnosis:
Bipolar I Extreme rapid cycling, General Anxiety disorder, Social anxiety disorder, PTSD, Fibromyalgia
My meds:
Equetro 800mg
Klonopin 1mg as needed for anxiety
Celexa 40mg
Atarax
Lyrica 100mg x 3 a day

I received it in a few months after I applied myself. I just sent my medical records, hospitalization records, a letter from a job I was fired from, and a personal letter why I am not able to work. I don't how often I have to be recertified. I think it's 3 years. I hope at that time, I won't be denied benefits.
