I just started using Depakote for bouts of mania and take Zoloft as well for depression. I'm very concerned about weight gain. I'm assuming those who have gained weight on Depakote have done so because they've experienced increased appetite? I'm on extended release and so far my appetite is pretty normal, but I'm concerned that might change down the road.

Hello Ann,

I was on Depakote and asked to be taken off because I was loosing too much hair. It worked well, but I did not want to become bald!

Now, I'm on Trazadone as my mood stabilizer each night.

All we can really do is stick with the med and keep a journal on how well it is working for us.

I hope for you in your journey. Keep on Truckin'

I'm jealous! My pdoc absolutely REFUSES to let me have trazodone because I'm bipolar. Giving it up has been extremely hard. I need it because I need to sleep. I take 800mg of Seroquel(yes, enough for a horse) and lunesta every night, but I still can't sleep the night through. I'm glad you have the trazodone. I wish your doc would talk to my doc!

Hi Amity,

Depakote does have the weight gain side effect. I took it a long time ago. I gained weight on it. I have tried almost every med they have that doesn't make you gain weight, and nothing worked for me. I have just gotten on Lithium, again. it's the only one that works fot me.

I would rather be sane, and happy, than skinny...LOL

God Bless,Gypsy
