Well.. I just had a question.. I'm new here so I thought I would post a bulletin. Anyways, my boyfriend and I have been dating for the past 8 months and he is awesome! He's been supportive of me through this whole time. Anyways, we have been hitting rock bottom lately because of manic episodes. How do other spouses deal with that? How does someone with bipolar control from having a manic episode with your loved one?

Hey Pixie are you the one with bipolar? if so are you on medications and therapy? if not you need to get in to see a doctor, a lot of the others will be better to answer your question, for me I haven't really had the high mania that the others have had, but prior to the medication I am taking it was hard to control my temper and my moods.

With the medication it is getting easier to stay in focus.

Yes, I am the one with my bipolar. Currently, I am taking an antidepressant right now and that is it. I tried different medications with my psychiatrist, but I have had many severe side effects. I am actually going to see my counselor and my psychiatrist next week because I don't want to ruin my relationship with my boyfriend with my out of control mood swings.

Isn't there some research that says that taking an anti-depressant without a mood stabilizer can actually make the symptoms of bipolar worse? Anybody heard that, I'm sure I read about that recently.

Yes jlh,

There is quite a bit of documentation regarding the sole use of antidepressants alone for the treatment of Bipolar. Everything I have read concerning BP and antidepressent treatment alone will cause mania in a person who truly has BP.

I just read an article on this very subject earlier this evening where the doctor recommends no use of antidressants unless mood stabilizers are ineffective alone.

I cannot remember the medication he mentioned but there was one that he recommended to be used in conjunt with an antidepressant to counter the potential mania induced by an antidepressant.

Hmmm... Hope that made sense... I hated English and to this day do not know how the hell I pulled A's!!!!!!

Thanks Lustrious for confirming that. The site I found information on this subject is:

www.psycheducation.org/bipolar/controversy/htm

if anyone wants more info on this.

lol, jlh, you took the words right out of my mouth, Dr. Phelps site is one that I refer folks to all the time, that is where I got the information for determining that I had bipolar rather than just severe depression, and like you both have said, treating bipolar with antidepressants alone isn't considered a good thing, being bipolar and being on 4 antidepressants at once, almost did me in. Now with the Lamictal, I have been able to get off all those, and take just the one pill,

Pixie, have you tried the lamictal?

i was recently diagnosed BP. I don't know if I am. Right now I just want a solution. But I can tell you. The last 3 years on antidepresents and medication for ADD have been a WASTE. I think this last year would have been worse had I not found information of dbsa.org. Pixie, I'll send you the link. Also I've been told that meds for add will make you cycle quicker. And BOY do they!

jlh,

That is the site I was reading earlier. Carmen who I have come to count on, for so many things now, had referred me there earlier.

BTW - thanks for taking me under your wing Carmen
