I have been recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and it is causing breakthrough depression and mood swings. I'm curios about how many of you also have thyroid issues.

I have discovered that depression is frequently caused by both hyper and hypothyroidism and doctors frequently treat patients for depression without checking thyroid hormone levels. I see my family doc every three months and always have my thyroid blood work done. Lithium can cause thyroid disease and if you take Lithium you must have your thyroid checked too.

A thyroid med called Cytomel is frequently used to boost treatment resistant depression.

That's interesting Dee. I am hypothyroid and of course depressed. I'm not sure I'm depressed from the thyroid problem tho. I know I depressed becasue of all the health issues. I can't be the person I used to be. I take 150 mgs of Synthroid. It's only one of the autoimmune diseases I have.

I hope you are having a good day.

Polly you may want to consider taking a natural thyroid medication such as Armour thyroid. Knoll Pharmaceuticals Co. has been under fire by the FDA for making Synthroid from numerous different formulations and for having inconsistent potency.

I highly recommend the book "The Thyroid Solution" by Ridha Arem, M.D. There is a lot more to treating thyroid problems than just taking a hormone replacement med.

Do you have regular thyroid blood work Polly? It is important to monitor your thyroid through blood work for the rest of your life. Ask your doctor about Cytomel, thyroid med, as an anti depressant boost.

I get my blood work done monthly. I've been on Synthroid since I was diagnosed in '91, without any problems. Thank you for the info. I will mention it to my Dr the next time I see him.

It's getting to the point, from having so many blood tests done over the years, my veins are going. The last visit, the nurse told me they go to the hands when they can't get a vein in the arm area. I even have scars.

Thank you,

Polly

Well this hyperthyroid business is getting the best of me. I have full blown manic depression symptoms, mood swings, anger, frustration, depression and now rapid thoughts. I see my psych doc tomorrow and I am anxious to see if he can help stop this. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in two weeks to address this problem and start treating it but I am not sure I can hold out that long. I am seriously considering hospitalizing myself. I guess I'll see what my psych doc thinks.

I've been taking seroquel for about 5 years now and have developed hashimotos thyroiditis. You mentioed being depressed. I've been depressed since I was a teen I am now 40 there is nothing I can take for it. If I take anti depressants it gets worse. Unfortuatly my husband (who is a great guy) doesn't understand depression and suicidal feelings so I have noone to talk to about it. That's the worst part. My insurance doesn't cover most of the cost of mental health treatment so I have noone to talk to there. But I do have xanax.

Peanut9689 I assume you are bipolar? I'm not sure I understand how an anti depressant can make your symptoms worse. Depression or mania? Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat mania, mood swings and rapid cycling. Bipolar disorder needs to be treated on both sides or it can increase symptoms on the side that isn't being treated. Can you consult your family doctor for advice? Don't let your insurance stop you from getting help. Look for a local crisis center or community mental health program.

I just did an eight day stint in the psych hospital. My psych doc started me on thyroid meds and increased my anti depressants. Can't wait until this is over!
