"to cptblack - What are you talking about? Nobody's rounding up the mentally ill!"

I believe he is talking about the days when the mentally ill were showered in ice water, given any number of gruesome treatments and even sterilized them.

While this is not happening now, "those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it".

Happened before. Don't think in the US it can't happen again.

Does it take 48 hours to analyze a blood test for meth? NO. Does it take 48 hours to call a person's doctor or health care facility to find out if the mental or emotional disorder they claim to suffer from is 'real'? NO. Does it cost too much to have a few breafings for officers on dealing with posible mental or emotionally ill people? If so something is wrong.

I had a PTSD 'Event' where someone triggered my PTSD defensive reactions. I sent the guy to the hospital before I realized it. The cops could have wrestled me to the ground, threw the cuffs on and drug me off to jail for a few days. I was totally dazed and non-combative.

Instead my supervisor told the reponding officers I was a Bipolar/PTSD person under treatment. They let me sit outside and smoke uncuffed, even lighting my cigs because I was shaking so hard. They sent two officer's to my house and one stayed with my sleeping son while the other drove the wife to where I worked. They allowed my wife to drive me in my car to the V.A. hospital with an escort following and the officer checked with the doctor after he had talked to me, examined me and gave me a shot. Then the officer followed us home.

They only came by the house to question me two days later, as they had an eye-witness to the event and fellow employees said the guy had planned it for weeks. I was never charged, kept my job and was never harassed about the event.

Of course all the officers in this department were trained with and carried emergency defibulators, had Red Cross 1st aid training up to near para-medic level and were most professional in their dealings with the public.

What a difference a small city can make if they really try.

Rent and watch "One Flew Over The Cookoos Nest" or "Catch 22". Fairly accurate portrayals of the thoughts of the time.

My parents dont even know about my disorders, they are not supportive of that kind of stuff at all. Well now they know about the panic attacks, but that's all. If I did something like try to have the cops badge everyone would know. My life is finally starting to become normal (except for being arrested) like all people my age want. I have never had a normal life. All I want is to continue taking medications and live a mellow uneventful life.

All I know is that here in TX I checked the spot on my license saying that I was mentally ill. I had an episode and because they pulled up my license and it came up.The police treated me well.I was not carried off and put into a hospital. They made sure that my family was going to take care of me until I could get to my doctor.I make sure that when I get my license renewed that I do check that box. That saved my life and I want the law to know that I'm not just flipping out or on drugs or just going off.

WOWOWOW!! I'm scared as hell now. I have frequent panic attacks and shake like a leaf in the breeze. I get lightheaded and change colors. I was stopped several times before and I was very lucky that for some reason I can't explain I was extremely relaxed when I was stopped. I believe that I speed and don't follow the road rules when I'm hypomanic. Maybe thats why it never phased me. 3x the cops let me go with a warning. Years back I had several kids without car seats (preschool carpool) And I was speeding real fast past a school zone. He let me go with a warning. About 2 months ago I was stopped for -- cutting off a police car with a huge 15 passenger truck to catch the light before it turned red. I didn't realize it was a cop. He told me he'll charge me with reckless driving. Much to my disbelieve, he let me go with a warning. I can't imagine how things would have turned out had I had a panic attack.

This might be a good time to mention medical bracelets. Bipolar disorder is a legitimate medical condition, and it's worth investing in a bracelet, necklace, keychain, or other knick-knack that contains your personal information and treatment information.

omg thats a great idea! and now a-days they have serial numbers that they can see all your meds so if you cant remember you just show them the trinket and your set! but you have to keep it up-to-date.
I can be your friend, I can be your confidant, we could be like blood in closeness. But i CANNOT be you. you must make your own decisions. some will be good, some will be bad. but I will never leave until you push me away.
