Three days ago I woke up and the entire right side of my upper body around my ribcage felt like someone kicked the shit out me...it hurt to turn, sit, cough...yet I took a handful of tylenol and sucked it up, chalking it up to one of those weird getting older types of pain. I even lifted up my shirt to see if there were any bruising - that is how bad it hurts.

Then I remembered I am high risk for a heart attack...overweight, smoker and a women (heart disease kills more women, so I've read) - and I remember reading that women's symptoms are different than men's: including pain in the upper abdomen. Did I make an appointment then? No, I smoke a cigarette and figured if my time is up, it is up...no heart attack happened. I also took some aspirin, so I guess I had some fear about a HA by taking this small precautionary step.

The last few days I have felt down - the physical pain almost seems like a welcome relief in some sick way...like I can focus on this instead of my BP head. Finally I called the nurse and she asked me a few questions about how I was feeling and deemed it unnecessary to go to the ER)...

Hubby thinks it is because I had a terrible cough last week that I might have damaged the muscles around my ribs...nurse thought that might be possible too. Just give me something to take the pain away! I've already exceeded the recommended amount of OTC pain relievers in a 24 our period.

I feel old. I feel broken. I feel I am not pulling my weight in the house (financially), and my husband is working so hard to make sure we are OK (overtime). I feel guilty for getting BP, now I feel guilty for having these pains...if I was a church going, work out freak on a vegan diet I would not be feeling this way. I feel I need to get busy and make some lifestyle changes but it is like my feet are stuck in cement shoes. I do NOT want to die young, but is 49 still considered young? Or maybe I just don't care.

That is it. Oh, and it doesn't help that my annoying WiiFit program says that physically I am 63! If this keeps up, next week I'll be 93 and will be throwing the whole Wii system in the fireplace!

I am going to the doctor this afternoon.

Hi Julie, I should be moving more too. My 80 year old dad still walks to the metro to work everyday! I'm pretty sure I won't even be at work at that age, assuming I'm still around! Smile I hope you feel better. I had chest pains a couple years ago and it ended up being pneumonia, but it went away after I took the meds for it. Not sure why I'm mentioning this. Smile Just to say I hear ya, been there, AM there. I hope it all works out!

Hi, Julie. I seem to be wearing a matching pair of shoes. I am younger then you and chronic pain is a constant, if unwelcome friend. I hope that you start feeling better soon. Smile

With BP and with depression in general comes a certain amount of body aches and pains that we often just have to deal with. Sometimes they're worse than others, it's just the way it is I've found. This is based on my own experiences, of course.

You should make an appointment to see a doctor, perhaps a pain specialist if it gets worse.

I wish you the best,

Sorry that your in such pain right now. Your husband thinks it might be related to your cough. Pleurisy which my hubby had causes alot of pain in that area. Not doctors but we are all diagnosing you.

I'm overweight, have asthma and osteoarthritis so I'm not fit and tire easily.

My dad is 83 and in better shape than I am even after heart surgery and now having incurable prostrate cancer. He's always busy, busy, busy.

Wishing you less pain soon.

EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE! That's the key to many body aches as we age ... as well as it helps to deal with the stress that triggers Bipolar mood swings.

The following is NOT intended to be construed, in any manner what-so-ever, as medical advice! These are simply facts that can be found on any medical web site and are taught in basic first aid classes as well as CPR classes.

Yes ... women's heart attack symptoms are different than men. Usually in the lower back, moving upward and into the neck. Sometimes in the side and hip, moving to the lower back and up. There are even documented cases where a woman was having a heart attack and she felt absolutely no pain what-so-ever ... other than in her teethe and jaw. (Tacoma Fire Department, Tacoma, Washington)

If you take the aspirin, place it under your tongue and let it dissolve. Absorption into the blood stream via mucus membranes of the mouth take less than one minute. Absorption into the blood stream via the stomach can take as long as forty-five minutes, depending on what you have previously consumed.

Take your own pulse, but better yet, have another do the same. The normal resting adult heart beats regularly at an average rate of 60-100 times per minute.

But here's the real kicker: IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS CALL 911! There is no bill for them to come take a look-see and their tires are round! They can go back to the station just as easily as they came to your house!

Thanks for the support - and thank you 2ofme for providing the heart attack info.

Turns out I have a hairline fracture on one of my ribs on the right side - there is no treatment other than advil (lots), and ice pack, then heat, ice, heat....still really painful...told me could take 6 weeks to heal a broken rib, since mine is not broken I am hoping for a fast recovery.

I had a bad cough, she thinks I dislodged my rib...said it happens all the time - some people actually can break a rib or more. Weird, huh. I didn't fall, or have any injury that would cause that...but it sure felt like someone kicked me!
