My husband is bipolar. He was sexually abused by another male when he was 10 years old. Is there a connection between sexual abuse and bipolar disorder? Does anyone know?

My (BP)ex was sexually abused as well, and so was I. PTSD(post traumatic stress disorder)and depression are frequently a result, and with any prolonged stress in the brain, it rewires itself, the way of processing and thinking changes and can lead to other things. From what I've read, there seems to many theories on what causes Bipolar and I believe I remember that being one of the possibilties, although it seems genetics plays a larger role.

Irregardless, therapy is very beneficial. Males often have a harder time processing the sexual abuse bc of the stigma society puts on men and sex. They often keep it more of a secret and it's generally not something spoken with guy friends so it has the potential to do more internal damage as a secret. I let mine out after I remembered it years later, but it still tooks years from there to find peace with it and I still struggle with panic when it comes to sex. (well, maybe not, I'm not dating now or for quite a while)

Hugs and welcome!

I can think of a few bad things that happened to me as a child, but I truly don't believe that they had anything to do with my illness. I think mine is more genetic. My mother & her mother were both "whackos" to me as a kid. I couldn't understand them or their reasoning at any level.

Maybe this all a lack of insight on my part, maybe I hit the nail on the head. I'm not sure.

My mother and grandmother seemed perfectly normal to me...until I grew up. Then I realized they both had severe depression. After that, I realized they were bipolar. Grandmother died at age 56. Mother died at age 54. As I am 41 myself right now, I am desperately trying to stop the trend. I also find myself watching my ADHD daughter like a hawk, just praying that it is only ADHD and not bipolar disorder.

My grandmother died of a massive heart attack. I learned that there was a doctor in my small hometown who had half the women in town hooked on his own "cocktail." I believe it contained cocaine. Many women in my town died "early," due in large part, I believe, to this now deceased doctor. My mother, who was depressed constantly until her first 2 grandchildren came along, died of metastasized lung cancer at age 54.

ok neither one of thease deaths are related to mental condtions so you propably are not of risk of a premature death but if you smoke tobbacco and contribute to both illnesses

The way I see the deaths as related to mental illness is that both tended to over-self-medicate...a lot. So I have to be careful not to do my own thing with my meds but to follow my doc's instructions. Mother and Grandmother were so deeply depressed the majority of the time, and they just looked to alcohol, cigarettes (mom only), and prescription meds (grandmother only). I don't smoke, and I am much more like my grandmother than my mother. But my dad sees both of them in me, and it worries him to no end. He just wants to make sure the pattern breaks, and so do I.
