Can anyone explain why your sex drive may be higher when you are bipolar? what would cause that?

I dont even know what a normal sex drive would be considerd as.... if you could help out w/ that one too that would be great...

Hello and be most welcome to the community, Nixie84.

I remember a (more or less) similar discussion about this: http://www.mdjunction.com/forums/bipolar-support-forums/ general-&-support/2682-is-elevated-sexual-desire-a-sypmtom-of-bipolar-ii

As to why this happens... that's an extremely interesting question. We know it's part of the highs, most often, along with other symptoms of the sort: overactivity, grandiose delusions, feeling on top of the world, sleeplessness, decreased need of sleep; even creativity can be a "symptom". It's part of the restlessness. But why... it's interesting to find out.

Do you have it all the time, or it varies with the moods?

It is a result of the "sex drive" chemicals (whatever they are) levels being too high. Same reason we want to spend like drunken sailor, drive too fast, create, talk....etc when manic/hypomanic.

Everyone's 'normal' sex drive is different. The only way you will find out what your 'normal' is (if you ARE bipolar) is to get successfully stabilized. Once your moods aren't bouncing around, you will find out what your normal sex drive is. Turns out, much to my surprise, that my 'normal' libido is much stronger than I would have imagined
