I did some searching and found this:

Bipolar disorder is a chronic recurrent illness in over 90% of those afflicted, and one that requires lifelong observation and treatment after diagnosis. Patients with untreated or inadequately treated bipolar disorder have a suicide rate of 15-25% and a nine-year decrease in life expectancy. With proper treatment, the life expectancy of the bipolar patient will increase by nearly seven years and work productivity increases by 10 years.

My grandmother suffer's from acute Bipolar, she is untreated and is 83 years old.

People with bipolar, or anyone suffering with mental illness, are more highly suseptable to become substance abusers. So, that can shorten their lives somewhat.

Please correct me should I be wrong; I know I did not choose the best wording. Ermm

there's more elderly than ever before
death happens every tiniest fragment of time and happens again every smaller tiniest fragment of time and there can be a tiniest fragment of time that makes life worth not losing . . .

I've heard that if you have an untreated mental illness when you are young, it could develop into a case of dementia later on when you are older.

I believe dementia affects many elderly people with or without mental illness. Having worked in nursing homes there are many elderly people on psyc meds.
