I have been rapid cycling for the past 3 years, in and out of the hospitals. I am 45

and always take my medication as perscribed religiously.

I had also been bleeding (had fibroids too) and getting my period every 2 weeks,

I tried to take my life in September ’07.

I decided the mood swings were so severe that I wanted a hysterectomy and ovarectomy.

I did the hysterectomy and ovarectomy operation in November.

I am still on the same medicaticion as before the hysterectomy,

depakote, Geodon, etc. but I have to tell you all the mood swings have stopped.

Just stopped. I have a life.

Perimenopause/menopause and Bipolar have to be studied, Help stop the madness!

Read "The Bipolar Handbook" by Wes Burgess and get A PDR (Physicians Desk Reference Handbook). We need to know about our Bipolar and about our medications.

I think this happened to my mother too. After her menopause, she was as normal as I've ever seen her. I agree. This needs studied.

Do you think, then, that this isn't bipolar at all?

Maybe just something with similar symptoms?

Not making light of anything, but perhaps this could be a hormonal imbalance of some sort?

I know I was never tested for that!

when i wasn a teenager tey put me on birt controntrol ills . thats when i first went off the deep end. as i got older with every period they told me i was bipolar. at age 45 while i was going through all these changes they again tried birth control pills to regulate my moods, again i was in a mental hospital, tried to kill myself. they diagnosed me agian this time as a "rapid cycler" i was getting my period every two weeks because of the changes and the fibroids my bodiy was going through. thats a lot of hormones- every 2 weeks. it looked like bipolar to me to. anyway when the light bulb finally did go off in my head to get rid if my ovaries, the day couldnt come fast enough. i swear to you i went from crawling on the floor weeping and wishing i was dead to thanking god i never killed myself. my doctors cant belief it. they say they are are going to tell other patients.

Well you all have given me something to think about. I had a partial hysterectomy when I was 25. They left my overies so I would not have to take hormone replacement. As it turned out they may as well have taken my ovaries because by the end of the year I was in complete menopause! Yup - removing my uterus caused my ovaries to completely shut down. I took estrogen for many years but it never restored my sex drive nor was I able to have an orgasm (long time to go without an orgasm let me tell you!) Finally I read an article in a magazine which informed me that our ovaries also produce testosterone and it is testosterone that gives both men and women their sex drive. So I took that article with me to my doctor and he put me on estratest (estrogen+testosterone) and Whalla - I could orgasm again and my sex drive was higher than it was previous to my hysterectomy.

So now I have to wonder just how much of a role our sex hormones have on our emotional and mental health... Come to think of it, the timing from when I started the estratest and the begining of my BP symptoms are closely related! As we all know medicine is a science... Damn - I honestly don't think they will ever really know what causes what and or why... studies are always changing, being challenged and conflict with each other... Grief - I tell you - Greif!

Great thread! I wonder how this would affect the male BP?

I don't know exactly what is going on with me in this area, I have PCOS, I think that's what it is. Anyway, before I was put on birth control I had a period just about always. I would start, it would last a month or two then stop a couple of days then start back. Now when I take the break for the bc my period won't start. I have absolutely no sex drive except when I'm off my birth control, and it sucks.

Our normal testosterone levels peak when we ovulate. When you take birth control, that levels out our hormonal levels & we no longer have that "peak". Testosterone is the hormone that makes us sexual. So yes, birth control makes your sex drive decline for this reason.

Hi! I had a TAH/BSO in August 2007. At first my HRT wasn't quite working well, so my Dr. changed me to the Viville Dot 0.1 and I am feeling fine. No hot flashes or night sweats. Insomnia though. And as of now my BP meds are working ok. Hope to keep this up!
