I have only discussed my theory with other bp people I know, and my pdoc. I don't think my theory is held just to bp brains but all, I just think bp may be a symptom of evolving brains. Actually I think most mental illnesses, aside from environmental ones, is a symptom. I believe that while our bodies might not be actively evolving, our brains are. They have to keep up with the faster developments in technology. But there are still other factors such as pollutants and genetics. Like how two people with too many common genes bearing children, and such like that. But have you noticed how much smarter children are naturally then they used to be. Maybe more exposure to modern technology also plays a major part. I actually have series of questions I'll ask everybody to see what hemisphere they use. But of couse I am also researching possible de-evolution as well, but I like the evolving one better. But as I said before, I may be delusional. But oh how fun picking brains is!!

Thats really cool I never thought of evolving brains more about what was taught in school about evolution. This topic got me really interested so I jumped on the web and did a bit of reading and your theory is seriously substantiated. Also with some possible side effects like disease, depression and possible de-evolution in the future.

LOL, Wouldn't it be creepy if our brains evolved beyond the need for a body and they kinda got around everywhere with tiny little feet.

Hey nembery, my mind can be similar to yours. Only thing is my recall of events is off and on and only certain events as well. Some things i can remember vividly some days and other things i can remember from out of the blue and suddenly without any trigger. Some things I remember when people prompt my memory and other things I can't remember if my life depended on it. I think the can't remember ever parts have to do with "blanking" out due to stress. I have heard that even so called normal people can blank out when they are under stress.

Thanks for the cool link! That's probably why we have headaches, our brains are just trying to just bust out and sprout those tiny feet, LOL!

I've actually thought the same thing when it comes to a BP mind a sign of an evolving brain. This may only be a sign that the human race is growing more intelligent and we just happen to be the first to experience the drastic change in chemicals in out brains. I find it very interesting how creative and articulate some of us are because of the disease.

When I am off medication it is a lot like being on street drugs(probably acid). I am confused as to why my brain does that and how effective medications are at ordering the chemicals in my brain. I do believe there is a reason and use for everything and BP is just another example of an evolving mind and spirit. Intelligence is just a side effect to our evolving minds.

I was recently diagnosed with Bi-polar, and have been asking myself this same question. On a personal level I did take a IQ test and did, well far beyond anything I thought myself capable of. Having said that, As many posters have noted, there are a number of different types of intelligence and I hardly think one pretty score solidifies myself as smart.

Basically, my laymans theory is this. Our brains are wired different then most (I have NO DOUBT anyone on this board would agree), and with that comes certain special traits, and deveasting ones. I essentially view it as a double edge sword one must learn to mastER

Now, dont get me wrong, I KNOW i am itellingent. I graduated college in four years before I was diagnosed (And this was the fruition of almost exculisve last second cramming and all night paper writing sessions at the end of the semester), have been succesful in any job I have ever had, even held leadership positions in college. HOWEVER, Every semester was a struggle (The work was easy, getting myself to do it near impossible), I had a drinking problem, a drug problem, a rage problem, and a sleeping with ugly drunk girls problem. Basically, I was a mess, a pos human being as far as I am concerned, but I still managed to get things done.

WHY? Cause as fucked up as my head was, when it did come around even for a few hours, I could get it done no problem.

Thus, the double edged sword. I started taking lithium a month ago, the results are fairly dramatic and unlike alot of people here I dont think I lost my smarts. But I also think I am very lucky in that its not so severe as the rest of yours so I really dont think my medication comparison is very relevant for most.

On a personal note, wtf. When I found out I was BP I wanted to laugh and cry and the same time. Im happy I know what I am fighting, I just wish it didnt make you want to kill yourself so bad.

I'm surprised to see my year old thread brought back up. There are a lot of new people on MDJ so it would be nice to hear what all of you think. Please post your thoughts. Thank you.

I think so and have heard that. Also creative and driven. Sometimes i am blown away with many of the people on here and there feedback about BP and life. I find them very intelligent and insightful.

I was starting to wonder the same thing myself. I also was thinking Is a BP more intelligent when manic? I mean you know there was a time when you convinced yourself you could be president right? 15 Great plans flowing through your head in a sea storm of self percieved brilliance. A IQ test (which is kind of bs in my mind cause intelligence is relative but none the less) then and say a few days later. Would there be a dramatic change?
