How is a doctor able to diagnose a person with bipolar disorder. What type of medical examinations if any are done to positively identify the bipolar disorder? My husband told me that if he is medically diagnosed with the disorder that he will then take his medication. He is currently seeing a psychiatrist but he is still in denial. He keeps telling me that his psychiatrist has not yet diagnosed him as being bipolar. How is that possible if he put him on two types of medication for bipolar. How is his psychiatrist able to determine his diagnosis? If you know the answers to any of these questions, please help me to get my husband to accept his illness and get treatment.

a phychatrist can do and evaluation of a person and he does this by talking about your symtoms he can also tell if you are in a manic stage by the look in your eyes and your actions.i dont know or think there is any blood test that show this promblem.Get your husband to read some litature on the subject. There are many famous people that suffered from this illness too.if he had heart problems or anything physical wrong with himself i'm sure he would take his medicine well a mental illness is not any different it is hard sometimes for one to accept the fact that they are but god made the brain just like he made the other parts of the body and they are all susceptical to get out of whack. hope this helped

Well...Ive been there and done that. It took 4 psychiatrists and friends to convince me i was bipolar. In fact, it was first my friends who "diagnosed" after attending a seminar on mental disorders. I just thought i was high strung or had anxiety probelms. It took a lot of reading books and time. The problem with bipolars is that we, amny times, DON'T SEE what were doing wrong or of we are acting inappropriate. I still have that problem....but now I can look back to a certain event or time, and think..."ok that wasnt nice or that was uncalled for." get him to search the web for research....get books, I like "An Unquiet Mind" by Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatrist who is bipolar herself. As for diagnosing....obviously there is no one TEST. BUT, i was given a full blood workup and physical to rule out any possible underlying medical problems that may attribute to bioplar symptoms. Once that's ruled out...tons of questions. Hours of questions. It's hard...but your husbancd needs to be as detailed as possible and dont hold back. the more info, the better. good luck
