MDJunction to me

Hazeldee"MDJunction means that I no longer have to feel like I am the only person in
the world with pericarditis. It means that I can talk to others who know
how stressful and how painful having pericarditis can be. It means that I
connect with others to discuss treatments that have or haven't worked for us, so that we have a leg to stand on. I think that having my friends at
MDJunction has allowed me to better mentally and emotionally process my
diagnosis and what it means to me. I feel so lucky to have this community
available to me. I use MDJunction as a way to use my experience to help
others. Reaching out to help others is the only solace I have found since
being diagnosed with pericarditis.

Something many don't think about, including myself, but should... is that the medications that you are on may cause your skin to be much more sensitive to UV Rays and cause severe sunburn.

I unfortunately experienced this myself late Monday morning. I spent only about an hour at the table in my yard doing some paperwork. The sun was bright, but it was still cool enough that I was wearing a sweater. The result was second degree burns on my hands. Not something anyone wants to deal with and it could have been much worse had I been out longer or had more skin exposed.

Here is a listing of medications that have this possible risk. Many of these medications have a minimal risk and some are not related to Bipolar at all. I'm putting all of them here, because I have been on my meds for a long time and this has never happened to me. The only new med I take is Flexeril, so I'm assuming that's what did it, but who knows. Many of us do take meds related to other issues as well.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your best defense is to wear protective clothing and apply a sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA rays.
Thanks for posting this list - I knew lamotrigine increased sensitivity but there are some things on there that surprised me that I'm also taking. Guess I better be extra careful to wear sunscreen!
This is definitely an issue for me! I have been on Seroquel for so long and I can't even handle the sun as far as it seems so bright I am constantly squinting even if it's partly cloudy. Also I already have a sunburn! And you know the sun is not THAT strong around here in WNY!
I am coming off Seroquel now and I didn't see Abilify on your list so maybe now this will get better Smile
I really hadn't thought about it, but it does explain quite a few things. Thank you for pointing it out.
Also, wow. Are you sure it's just the medications? Because that sort of burns sounds like you are producing a lot of free radicals, and those always accumulate in fast growth tissue. I don't mean to alarm you, but maybe you should talk to your doctor about doing some testing, starting with hepatic output. Something you are taking might not be agreeing with your metabolism, or your metabolism could be giving you a signal that it's unhappy all on its own.
Thank you again for the data, and I'm sorry that you had such a terrible reminder.
Bipolar type II, treatment resistant, insomniac
300 mg Lamictal
300 mg Welbutrin
300 mg lithium
75 mg pregabalin
