We talk about meds a lot here, so I wanted to offer a post about skills that go with recovering from Bipolar. I could've written more, but here are ten I picked at random--all have been greatly helpful to me.

Perhaps you have comments, additions, or criticisms. I'd like to hear them. I won't take offense if you choose to differ. Maybe you have a story about how one of these, or another, technique has helped you. No technique is too modest as far as I'm concerned.

1. Learning to spot mood episodes and manage them before they get out of hand.

2. Teaching loved ones the best way to handle mood states, both for them and for you.

3. Staying on your meds. Not making impulsive switches without good reason and support from your doc or family.

4. Learning tools like DBT and CBT and not just relying on medication solutions.

5. Learning how to pull yourself out of a depression.

6. Learning and practicing mindfulness meditation.

7. Cutting stress, using whatever methods you can find.

8. Recognizing that severe mood episodes are often traumatic, and using healing techniques for trauma to ease our pain.

9. Focusing on recovery, not just stability.

10. Always attending to our real life social networks, so we have friends when we need them. Computer networks are good too.

DBT = Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

CBT = Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or just Cognitive Therapy

You can easily find books on these two therapies, and you can inquire if your therapist uses them. DBT is good for beginners but CBT is the more powerful, in my opinion. One book on CBT basics is called Feeling Good, by David Burns. It's a bestseller, is in most bookstores, and is not expensive. He does underestimate the usefulness of his book for Bipolar, so when you read that passage, just ignore it. It's just not his specialty.

What do I mean by recovery? Continual improvement and growth, allowing for a few bumps along the way. Being dedicated to obtaining long-term remissions from mood episodes and symptoms. Going past treatment, towards wellness. Taking responsibility for your own understanding of your illness and treatment and refining them. Not taking it easy and hoping meds will save you by themselves.

#2 would be great if I could get my family to be willing to learn. They have the attitude that it's all me, and that I am the only one who can do anything about my behavior. They fail to see that sometimes the way they treat me can trigger a situational depression which then turns into a "real" depression.

Hey Sparky!

Great post, thank you for sharing it with us.

After my recent manic/mixed episode I realized that I could no longer live on 'cruise control'... As you said; thinking my meds would do all the work. I had been cruising along happily for a number of years so... Anyway, awareness was born of the fear and pain I felt while the Pdoc and drugs were trying to bring me down and my life fell apart. I realized that I needed to be an active participant or my recovery would only be temporary. In addition to many of the tools you listed, following are some I do:

* No caffeine for me

* Very limited alcohol for me... Like almost none Sad (I'm a specialty beer lover so this is hard).

* Exercise every day even if its only a comfortable walk

* Multi-vitamin, fish oil, and good diet

* Reaching out and making connections, especially when I need a boost (this is the hardest for me)

Lastly; I came up with a 'life plan'. A sort of blueprint for the rest of my life. Not concrete, more like a guide so that when I'm down or feeling uneasy, I have something to help remind me of where I am, why I am doing what I'm doing, and where I am headed. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for this thread...... I agree on the sticky if we can do that. I would like to be able to go back and look at this when I have more time. I tend to rely strickly on my meds to get me to where I need to be and I need to be proactive in my recovery. Thanks again, this really made me think and shed some new light on my personal development with my disease.

I'm starting up therapy with a psychologist who treated me at the mental health centre back in 2007 i loved him he was soo good helped me lot, right now i need to clean up a lot of stuff from this recent med adjsutent episode, healing and recover needs to take place and i know meds alone won' do it, i need guidance...so yes we need extra help at times, i have sought it out when needed over the yrs, felt sometimes i did not need it too tho.

If this becomes a sticky, maybe if Sparkerama could add now any more stuff, just go in and edit and add now...not sure who decides on stickys this would be a good one for mainance for our bipolar, i too like teriny need to come back and review when i have more time.
