I was diagnosed with very severe sleep apnea in August. I have not had any symptoms of depression or manic behavior for years. I believe its possible that I was misdiagnosed as Bipolar because of my severe sleep disturbances, which can cause many of the same symptems. My doctor is letting me get off of my Effexor Xr, but it has to be done gradually. My question is, how long does it take? I went from 300mg to 200 mg 4 weeks ago, I called my Doc and told him I was doing well, but he wants me to stay on this dosage for a while. Have any of you successfully stopped taking effexor? How long did it take? Perhaps he is being carefull because I am still very sleepy in the daytime, and was recently put on Provigil by my sleep doctor. I have been able to reduce my risperdahl from 3.5 to 1mg and have not noticed any recurrance of mania. Virginia

Hi, virginia57,

A little word about the Provigil: It can (occasionally) make some folks a little manic if taken everyday. It also of course depends on your dosage. I've noticed that if I take 200 mg for more than 2 days in a row, I start becoming aggressive, start too many projects that I don't finish, etc. BUT, it has saved my life at times by keeping me awake while driving. Excellent med, but do tuck that bit of info away just in case.

I am not a nurse, but I do work in a hospital and have seen lots of pts/coworkers struggle to get off effexor. I'm not sure about specifically effexor xr. I know that my mom struggled with it for about a year (sorry to tell you ) before she could get completely off. I'm sure it must be a good idea to really take your time. She isn't bipolar, so she wasn't on other meds similar to yours, but got extremely dizzy and felt generally horrible during discontinuation. This seems to be the case with everyone I've personally encountered. By the third day of discontinuation, they are not able to go get the effexor from the pharmacy due to the symptoms.

Best of luck to you, friend. Take your time and I'm sure you will be doing well soon.

thanks, the Provigil did nothing for my feeling sleepy all day long, so I'm going to stop that. It has too good of a chance to cause mania to take if I don't get the benifit from it that I want. I guess I need to wean myself off of that too. I've heard a few bad things about getting off of the effexor, but nothing specific. If I know I have to take my time, I won't be as anxious about getting completely off of it. I have had residual problems with strange thoughts or voices, what ever you call it, that have completely disapeared since lowering my effexor xr, so I hope I can get off of the rest in due time. Thanks again for your thoughts, Virginia

virginia57 may I ask what medications you are taking besides the two you listed? Are you replacing the Effexor with another mood stabilizer and do you also take an anti depressant?

I went through an involuntary withdrawal from Effexor XR after taking it for almost two years. I have since learned that Effexor can often induce mania and this and psychosis is exactly what happened to me. This is a medication I have no trust in and recommend it for no one.

This aside, I wonder if you can go through a detoxification program in your area. Some psych hospitals specialize in this area of treatment. I only say this because it might be a better way to quickly get off Effexor completely and guard your health at the same time. I'm not saying this is necessary but just a thought.

I hope I don't sound 'scary'. I am not a health professional and I am very opinionated about things that I have had a bad experience with. I hope you find the answers you need.

Thanks for your concern . I am taking 1mg of risperdahl, and dilantin for a seizure disorder. also a small amount of benztropine to manage the side effects of the risperdahl, and 25 mg of lamictal for seizure disorder. I don't think I'll need to go the detoxification route with the effexor. I was on loads of phenabarbital for seizures years ago and weaned myself off of it , it just takes time. I understand your concern though. I went through the same thing with topomax and zoloft. One of the two, or the combination , put me in the hospital for severe mania. My son in law is taking topomax for his migraines, and its been a big help for him, so its not a bad drug, just not a good one for me. I've been on the effexor for 8 years, so I'm sure it will take a while to get off of it. I'll just have to be careful to watch myself for mania symptoms, and get to the doctor asap if they occur.
