I was reading the news and apparently medical card patients in illinois are now only allowed to see their therapists 10 times in a year...wth am i supposed to do? i thought once every 2 weeks wasn't enough! i've already had 2...and the worst part is NOBODY TOLD ME! so it looks like i'm just going to be on my own for more than half the year? which means i'll lose my therapist completely. why am i even trying to get better when it seems like no one else gives a damn? the state just keeps making it more impossible...my family could care less. i should just give up, go crazy, and let the state pay for me to sit in an institution for the rest of my life

That's terrible! That's an example of where those with mental illness stand in the government's priorities. I am so sorry you are facing this. Are there support groups in your area? You might dig around and try to find one. Group support would be helpful in some ways, though admittedly it won't completely replace what you really need. You might try checking with your local public health clinic where you would get psychiatric care and see if you could possibly see one on a sliding scale basis and not use the card. It would be out of pocket, but could be affordable on a sliding scale. Just some suggestions. I truly am sorry you have had this happen.

I know with my insurance I am allowed 30 visits a year. But if I go over. She breaks her fee down for me so I don't pay full price.

And I live in Illinois.

i don't have any mental health places in my county. and the out of county places have changed their policies so they don't take out of county patients. great isn't it! i had the same problem when i was pregnant. i asked one ob nurse if i should just go squat in a bathroom when the time came and she said i guess so and hung up on me! heck the 1 hospital located in my county has no ob, no ob unit, no psychiatric...not to mention the horror stories that walk out of there! it's just so frustrating because it's hard enough to get well without the morons in charge throwing roadblocks in front of you.

and pirate i'm glad you have someone who sounds good! i don't know of any therapists who will do that around here...most of them have a pay me now or leave thing goin on. heck most DOCTORS seem to have that! i'm just so sick of the fighting

I'm so sorry about your situation! Are there any groups (MDDA) that could help fill the void? I was in a similar situation once and found myself spending 2/3rds of the session recounting what had happened since the last time I'd seen her!

To cut down on this, is there any way you could maintain a weekly email relationship? I express myself so much better in writing sometimes, it helps me straighten out my head, and my therapist welcomes questions, comments, etc. (not books of course) about once a week. Maybe your therapist could allow for this? Can't hurt to ask . . .

One thing you said really struck a chord in me: as I put it, "well then I'll just let go and allow myself to go crazy and wind up in an institution!". Yeah, I totally get that. I feel that way from time to time.

My friend recently spent about 3 months in and out of the hospital diagnosed with either schizo-affective or schizophrenia (and alcoholism), and she keeps in touch with people who have gone on to "institutions". One "friend" with schizophrenia is in a decrepid place where there are free-roaming mice everywhere. He kicked one and it died (nice "friend") -- I remind myself that this is the reality of institutions. On the other hand, I am so aware of the tight grip I have on myself to stay sane. It's one day at a time!

So I'd recommend the emailing and groups, if they exist in your area (or you could start one at a hospital, when you've got the energy.

So sorry to hear of your circumstances. Take care!

I attend a DBSA Support group every week and that has helped me a great deal. Here is the link if you want to see if there is one in your area http://www.dbsalliance.org Another game being played by my insurance company is not allowing me to see my pdoc and tdoc in the same day. I tried to free up my schedule and get them both out of the way a few times and now I am getting billed, I will refuse to pay but still. Good Luck!

I just checked out DBSA and they are awesome. I liked their link to the Wellness Tracker tool. There is a support group about 30 minutes away from me which is amazing as I live in the middle of nowhere.

Great resource. Thanks so much.

This is awful for you! The government is cutting everything it seems like for mental illness. Keep going to the sessions that you have and if you can, go to a sliding scale clinic if you can like Uppity suggested. Also support groups like the others suggested. Coming here of course will help, but it's not the same as your therapist. I hope that you can benefit from what you get. It really isn't fair, I agree. I hope you can feel better and find a support close to you.
