So I have a question.

Been married 12 years.

10 years ago, my wife who had a history of depression and anxiety, decided all the sudden that she 'loved me but wasn't in love with me'. She wanted to separate, etc.

Here's the thing. Those 'feelings' and thoughts which usually are accompanied by depressed/suicidal thoughts, only occurred twice in our marriage, 10 years ago, both times during the same year.

1 year ago, to help with high anxiety and depression, she switched from Prozac to Effexor. Since then, despite the addition of other meds (Seroquel, Risparadol, and now lamictal) every single month, the week before her period starts, those same 'feelings' and thoughts pop up.

We were both thinking back last night, and the fact that those emotions have been cycling for the last year has us thinking maybe it has been the Effexor all along?

We have an appt with her Phychiatrist tomorrow to talk with her about it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone....

I have read research that supports that antidepressants and/or stimulants cause rapid cycling and more severe episodes. Also, another member here quoted her pdoc as saying that Effexor was the worst antidepressant for bipolar people.

I don't know unequivocably that these things are true, but feel that there is a reasonable chance that they are.

My advice is purely personal. I am not a Doctor and there is NO substitute for getting proper medical diagnosis and advice.

Bipolar II, Depressed Severe

Lamictal 400 mg
Seroquel 150 mg
Effexor 150 mg
Inderal 10 mg
Ambien 5 mg
Lithium 1200 mg

I have heard the same, Effexor is NOT good for Bipolar patients. I hope that she is able to get things straightened out.

I was put on Strattera by a psychMD when I wasnt diagnosed as bipolar yet, and let me tell you - I was MANIC for a couple of weeks...bought over $1,000 of cookbooks, and applied for student loans for cooking school, and told myself I was going to open my own restaurant! Smile I would definitely stay away from any sort of stimulant. I've even cut down on coffee and diet pepsi because my MD thinks that the caffeine can work as a drug stimulant.

Some people even believe their is a specific bipolar disorder induced by medications so it could certainly be that the Effexor is the problem. I belive that certain medications can induce bipolar. Have you talked with her pdoc about this? Does she have a therapist? I hope she can find a good med combination soon and the thoughts go away. GOod luck and props to you for being so supportive- she is very lucky to have you!

If it's always happening the week before her period then it's more likely hormonal than the effexor.
