Hello my name is Doug I believe I may be Bipolar. I dont have medical insurance or a Dr. and I dont know what to do. I have been reading online and it sounds like I will need meds and therapy and that sounds expensive. I dont qualify for Medi-Cal either so perhaps someone can help me with some information.

Thanks

I dont know. Where should I start? Should I get an insurance policy so I can afford the help I may need? Should I go to my local mental health place and ask them what to do? I really just dont anything. Iam having difficulty naviating this site as well.

well there might be a free clinic, some cities have them for people who don't have insurance, but you definately should see a doc for a formal diagnosis, and then medications.

Just take things one thing at a time. Don't let it all overwhelm you. Smile

Hi toggs - welcome to the group! I'm glad you decided to be here with us!

First of all, you need a diagnosis before you should worry about the next steps. Why get your head all muddled up when you're not even sure what the problem is? Take a breath & realize that the process of dealing with all of this doesn't have to be so overwhelming....

Like LadyRahl said, check into community fee clinics in your area (almost every city/state has one...). Mental health clinics can evaluate your situation and set you on the right course of action. If you're having trouble finding resources in your area, try these sites to help you find one:

Good luck toots! I'm in your corner... Keep posting!

What are the course of events I should exspect? Are they going to keep me overnight like they would if I was suicidal? I tried to get help about 5 years ago back when I had insurance and found the hospital's response to be insulting. They told me if she was going to speak with me that I would have to drug test a few times a week and everytime before she would speak with me. Like I was on parole or something. WTF?

Are you suicidal? IF so, please go to the hospital. IF not, the dr would have no reason to put you there. As far as drug tests are concerned, I thought they only did that if you were addicted to something.

Toggs - not sure if you saw it or not, but check out the links I posted for you right above your last poast.... maybe they can help answer some of your questions.....

Yeah, I know what you mean about the hospitals. Unfortunately, some of them still dont know how to deal with mental illness... That's why a community mental health center is your best bet.

If you are suicidal, the hospital will keep you under observation. They need to monitor you until they are sure you no longer are a harm to yourself....

I know you don't want to go through the hospital experience again, but if you are having serious suicida thoughts, you need to call 911...

If you're suicidal and you're afraid that you'll hurt yourself, then yes, they might keep you over night.

I'm sure the hospital procedures depend on where you are, maybe they get a lot of 'drug seekers' (aka people who fake an illness to get meds). It's disgusting but it does happen. I'm sorry that they were like that though, they really shouldn't have been.

Always keep in mind that there's more than one doctor in the ocean. Sometimes it's takes a few before you find 'the one' and it can be a very disheartening process.
