Has anyone had ECT treatment? What do you think about it? At what point does one consider having it?

I've had ECT and would reccommend it to anyone so far in the pit meds can't get you out. I had some short term memory loss right after it happened, but 8 months later, I'm doing fine. I;ve had a couple of lows here and there, but was taken care of with meds. All in all, great treatment for those who really can't get the meds to work. I call it a jump start to the brain, so the meds can work well.

I've never had it and know nothing about it, so I'd certainly appreciate the education....

It's called Elctroconvulsive Therapy. It is a series of elctro shocks that give your brain a seizure and "free up" the neutro transmitters that receive the good stuff (I forgot what it was called). It helps with chronic depression.

yes justremembering the electricity induces a grand mal seizure

when i worked in a psych hosp. i got to observe an ect treatment. it was not anything that you see in the movies because they do give you medicine so that your muscles will not move when you seize and of course you are asleep. we are lucky to be alive now because in older days ect was rough, your bones would break they would shock you so much

anyway i've seen it work wonders on people who are just gonzo, mute, somewhere else and it brings them back

and then they look at you and say don't i know you?

I've had problems following ECT and wouldn't have it again. It is not usually done for people with bipolar, but at the time I had it I was diagnosed with major depression, suicidal and totally unable to function. I never thought it helped me, just passed the time while waiting for the meds to work. I had 13 ECTs when I was pregnant with my first child, then 8, and 13 later on. I had only short term memory problems after the first 2 courses, but after the 3rd I had loss of long term memory of many past memories that have never come back, including the early years of my children and other precious memories. It also affected my working memory, affecting the type of work I can do now. I get overloaded with information very easily, and now can't read scientific journal articles which has prevented me from returning to research studies (I have heard this from other people doing higher degrees). I have to relearn the same information over and over unless I am using it everyday. My doctor is currently trying me on a med to help memory. I can no longer enjoy doing the complicated knitting and sewing patterns I did as I can't hold enough information and lose my place. My previous dr assured me it wouldn't cause permanent memory loss or I would have refused and he accused me of 'tying his hands' when I refused to continue. People at work know I have a poor memory but they don't know why. Not everyone has this degree of memory loss, and some drs still argue that there is no permanent damage. The thing I looked forward to when I had it was the blessed injection of what ever they give you that puts you out immediately into complete oblivion where no bad thoughts could follow. It was almost worth it for that.

sorry you had such a bad experience with ECT. I know they recommend it for pregnant women. Because of the med issue

My understanding it is where they stimulate the brain with electrical shocks to help with the bipolar disorder/depression . My grandmother had these back in the day but they were frown upon them . now they use that as a mehtod of treatment ., More so for those that meds have not helped

here is a link that best describes ECT and what it does and all.
