After my first month of Lamotrigine, I first noticed a strange sensation when I went to bed at night. I felt a bug scurry across my shoulder. Naturally, I sat up quickly, flipped on my lamp nad tried to locate the pesky little invader.

I couldn't find it, and after a quick inspection I lay back down. I didn't even have the chance to turn the lamp off before I felt the little bastard again. I ripped off all my covers scanned the bed carefully, and came up with nothing.

Annoyed, but satisfied nothing was there, I went back to bed. I felt it again; I ignored it in order to get a good nights sleep. The next night, my little freind had returned to tuck me into bed, and I, once again, tore my bed apart looking for it. It was a bugbed or something, I thought. Shit, thats just gross. I'll look it up in the morning and see what they are, and how to kill them.

I did some research. No bugbed. It was getting worse too, it felt like 5 or ten of the bastards would jump right on me as soon as I went to bad at night, they felt like fleas or something. I was having a hard time getting to sleep. They next day, one of the little shits had hitched a ride in my pants to work, and was spending a good part of the day running around on my inner thigh and biting me. It was hard to concentrate on things, the worst part is I couldn't dislodge him from my pants, he would hide or something everytime I went to get him.

That night, when I got home, I showered a nice hot shower. Did all my laundry including my bedding, and did a thorough inspection of my bed to ensure that no fleas, or bedbugs, or anything otherwise was hiding. There was nothing. I remade my bed; moments after I climbed in, I felt the little bastards on me. The next day at work, a bug in my pants, they felt like they were on my chest too. Oh it would get bad when I was on my computer as well. Bird mites. I had goddamn bird mites, birsmites.org helped me correctly classify my problem, and now I had solutons to deal with it.

In order to fight a bird mite infestation you must do the following.

Clean everything - fine.

Shampoo carpets - I ended up doing this from 11pm-2am, but fine it was necessary.

PineSol the Walls - fine

Use borax on the carpet and then vacuum it up - fine.

Wash all your clothes in Hot water, then put them in a sealed container with moth balls - Fine, I'll stink like an old box of linen for a few days.

Seal your mattress with something - Fine. Pissblanket it is. Boxspring too.

This list goes on, getting more desperate, as the problem continued to escalate. I hadn't really slept in three days.. oh an hour here and there.. but not really slept. Odd thing is, I still hadn't managed to capture one of the things.

I can go on like this for hours, telling you guys all the stuff I had to do, but I'll shorten the story.

Got Pest Control to come in. They bombed and fogged and dusted. It was greatly reduced for a while. Then it came back, but nothing was quite as bad as the first few days when the problem exploded.

I was putting vicks vapo-rub all over my face because they were crawling up my nose or into my ears or around my eyes while i tried to fall asleep. Little invisible bastards.

Threw out a bunch of furniture. They must have infested the furnitiure as well as the carpet.

PCO came and fogged.

And again.

And I was trying more and more desperate things to get them to go away. Some days were manageable, other days were just hell. I dreaded sleeping in my bed, so I began sleeping in an easy chair. For a month. I moved out of that apartment.

Got all new furniture. New Bed, new pretty much everything. And now, here I am this very second, I must be covered with at least a hundred of the things. On my chin, near my eye, in my hair, on my back, my arms, my chest. In my eyes and ears, nose, and for some bizarre reason they are leaving my legs alone, and the worst part of it is. They don't even fucking exist.

And I can feel them now, and its SO REAL. I would swear there is an ant crawling up my chest. I even see hairs move as I feel them jump around in that area. Eyelashes twitch as they walk across.....I just went to the mirror to check again for the millionth time, and as always.. nothing. The bites are like a hot pinprick, I feel them crawl and jump. I know they are not real, but somewhere in my mind the feeling is so real, that there HAS to be somethign there.

After five months of this, to varying degrees of severity, I'm ready to give in or give up.

Ekbom's Syndrome.

Delusional Parasitosis.

I think it's the Lamictal, a drug that has helped my mood, and BP so much. I brought it up to my doctor and he prescribed risperidone, but I didn't like it.. it made me feel wierd. The side effects scared me too.

I don't know what to do. I'm going to bed. I have muscle relaxors to help me do that. Everything sucks.

I'm gonna quit taking these fucking pills, they all do wierd shit, and I don't know whats worse: this, or being depressed, and angry all the time.

I started reading this thread thinking it was a joke....then realized it was serious. I can relate to the late night restlesness. For me it felt like something was fluttering or flying UNDER my skin. Itching doesnt do any good. Anyway I hope you feel better soon

When I was reading this post I started getting itchy, thinking what if these mites were in my apartment. I am so sorry you are going through this! I can't imagine anything more aggrivating that feeling something you know is not there. There has got to be something else you can take that will not make you feel this way. Tell your doctor you cannot take it. He/she will figure out what to put you on instead, and not just add something else to the mix. Sometimes you have to tell your docs a couple times before they listen. I think they also want to believe it will eventually stop. Well, like one of my trainers used to tell me about patients and bleeding, "it will stop eventually." True, but do you really want it to get that bad before it stops. No! Make sure you don't leave your next appointment with your doc before your doctor addresses your issues. Hallucinating is not an acceptable side-effect for any length of time.

Dear Ikaz...I feel like things are crawling on me too...dry skin is the culprit in my case, and an active imagination.

Like Geekgirl said if it is hallucinations tell the doctor.

Ikaz your disribtion is so detailed i could feel them on me.There are many reasons for intense itching it seems likly it is a med reaction there are a lot of different meds out there if you tell your doc in detail like you told it here and then tell him you need to try a different med .There are also other things that can contribute to the problem as Norma said dry skin but also the wrong soap,or the detergent you wash your laundry in other enviromental conditions there are other reasons for itching /skin crawling feeling.Hope you find releif and i'm so sorry you are going through this!

Thanks. It's barely noticeable this morning, but it was a nightmare last night when I was venting about it.. I am going to bring it up again with my doctor, and ask if i can be referred to a specialist.

Just an update on this.

My doctor added Seroquel to my medicational regimen.

Seroquel seems to have fixed it for the time being.. I guess it was some kind of psychosomatic thing.

Glad that you're doing better! I'm with Krissy, I thought it was some kind of humorous joke but as it went on I was like oh crap... that sucks...

I think maybe a part of it is in your head, at least at this point. I know that when we had a lice scare I swore I could feel the little bastards in my hair all the time and there was never anything there. It was totally mental for me at least. The mind is a powerful thing... but I think that at the beginning they were real.

Bugs are freaking harder than hell to kill!

Oooh... shiny!
