It is important to understand that even after 44 yrs, I am continuing to recover and to evolve. I just hope I can help others." (scotty04901)

I am a single mother and have lost all my friends due to being bipolar. My friends I had before are career-minded and I'm not working. How do you all meeting others? Are there local groups you have joined?

Thanks,

Melissa

I've been joining meetup.com groups and going to do things with them... it's a great way to meet people. There are social groups (I joined two last weekend), outdoors groups (I'm in a couple of hiking groups), etc. You can find groups that match whatever interests you have... religion, hobbies, groups of girls to go out and have fun with, movie groups, restaurant-going, exercise and outdoors, parenting... the possibilities are endless, especially if you're in a fairly large metro area.

Volunteering with something you enjoy is another way to meet people. My meetup group is volunteering to do work for our RiverDay Fest this year. If you are spiritual, going to church can open up new doors as well. Meetup.com is an awesome way to meet new people.

I agree. There are even groups for mom out there. like MOPS(mother of preschoolers)..just an example. I joined my knitting group through Ravelry.com they have local knitting goups around the world.(just an example) I didn't like meetup dot com for my town because all they had was a club for group night clubbing and new age stuff. oh, and political movemnts..gotta like those.(shrug) I live in a relatively small town. i met alot of people though my church too. just doing things like visiting the shut-ins..opened up a whole new world for me..they don't work either, and are always happy to see me.(as long as I call first to make sure they ain't sleepin)

I met all of my friends in school. If you have the means, it might be helpful to take a class in something you're interested in. That can be a good way to meet people.

Or like others have said, joining a special interest group is a good way as well.

I've never tried meetup.com but maybe I will check it out.

I personally make friends online. I am busy working into the night during the week, so getting out there is hard to make time for. I am online all the time so I love to meet new people that way. I have met some new friends on here, Facebook, and even on Craigslist. Craigslist has a wonderful platonic section where you make male or female friends. Of course some of the people on there might be shady, but here and there you will meet someone awesome that you can become friends with. I've made several friends from CL this year and we chat every day online. I talk to them online, text, or e-mail...I don't actually meet most of them. But they are my Internet buddies. I've made some of my best friends online!
