Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone had any good reading recommendations where the main character, or the author is bipolar?

I read An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison this summer. That was an extremely sobering read, and made me understand that I needed to be receiving treatment again for my bipolar. I guess I'm just looking for something else along the same lines - something more with a storyline and not just about living with or how to survive bipolar. A lot of books I find about the topic seem to be more like an instruction manual that I just don't find useful at all.

Another book I found extremely inspiring was Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (darn it, Oprah!)- she spoke a lot about a battle with depression, and how she overcame it. Of course, if you read the book, you know that not everyone can take, or is willing to take such extreme measures to "overcome" what she went through. So, this one was definitely not about bipolar, but still extremely good, and I think worth reading as a bipolar "patient" (there's nothing PATIENT about me!). Also, it created some good dreams and fantasies for me!

"It's all right to feel good. It's all right for nothing to be wrong. The deepest dream that we have could be tomorrow's song."

i absolutely love sylvia plath's "the bell jar." i didn't realize how messed i was until i read that book, because everything in it seemed so normal to me, but it's clear from it's reputation that it's not normal! (i know, i know, what is "normal" anyway?)

another great book, it's not about bipolar but MPD, is "when rabbit howls" but i don't remember the author. it is a sort of autobiography written by a woman with MPD. warning, though, there are some horrible abuse scenes in the book.

my favorite book of all time is "she's come undone" by wally lamb. every woman should be required to read that book, it's amazing. (and on Oprah's list!) i don't remember if they ever come out and say what her mental illness is, but i related to the character almost all the way, and i think every woman can (maybe men, too?).

i love to read, so when i get over to the library, i'll see if i can find some of the books you mentioned and let you know what i thought of them.

thanks

I so agree with zovjraar that the Bell Jar is an excellent read. I read it when I was a freshman in high school and remember thinking, "A-HA!" And I also recommend She's Come Undone.

OOO! Now i am on a quest to find more books! I'll let you know what I find. (I'm a former English teacher and you got my curiosity piqued.)

There's another one with a male main character that is called The Province of Hope.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I am so excited to pick these books up and start reading!

I'm excited to look up the Bell Jar and An Audience of Chairs!

I definitely agree about She's Come Undone. I read that in high school, and it was definitely a book that helped me get through those years.

Another good book I've read is The Good Patient by Kristin Waterfield Duisberg. The book is about a successful woman into self-mutilation, and her husband and therapist who are trying to help her.

& a total just for fun book - Bitter Is The New Black by Jen Lancaster. This is a wicked funny book about a woman who finds herself unemployed at the end of the dot-com era.

lol... i'm going to walk out of the library tomorrow with like, 10 books! a really awesome book that stayed with me for weeks after i'd read it was "Look at Me" by Jennifer Egan. it's about a model (not super model) and what happens to her after a car accident, there are a lot of side stories that all come together at the end and it's just amazing.
