Hi all

I am having a hard time with my VA doctors, as they will no longer let bipolars have anti-depressants anymore....they are saying that there is just to much chance for them to get you manic...I have used AD in the past and had no problems....I am stuck as not working and having any other insurance the Veterans are the only choice I have.

Here is alittle about myself, I have been bipolar 1 since 19 years old and I'm 50 now. I usually have manic episode first then depression. Sometimes I don't get the depression after at all...but this last hospital trip in December has left me not feeling good yet. My meds are 600 mg of Tegretal and 200 mg of Seroquel for sleep. I just say doctor today and she increased the Seroquel from 100 to 200 instead of a antidepressant. I am moderately depressed right now, but feel so sad. I find it hard to do things anymore. I am beginning to be a recluse.

Anyway has anyone else ran into this also. Or can you tell me what antidepressant worked for you without getting manic from it.

Thanks alot.

I am glad I found this site....

Prozac and Buspar work really good for me, for anti depression...I also take lamictil, serequel, clonidine and invega

Prozac has worked great for my son for the past 9 years...maybe the VA doctors are being kind of conservative in their prescribing protocol for bipolar. I would keep speaking up for myself if you are feeling depressed...and sad.

Hi Loveflowers-I am also Bipolar 1 and like you I do get manic first then depressed. I really don't understand why the doc would say that. I am not a doc but it would seem to me if anti-depresants work why would they stop it. I take Tegretol, serequel, lithium, and an anti-depressant that starts with a C and they all work for me pretty well.

Keep talking with your doc loudly if you need to. Jeanne

I don't know if it is a concern to the docs, but I went on Silexa as an AD when originally diagnosed as just depressed and it made me suicidal because I was Bipolar II. I take Wellbutrin successfully along with the Lamictal.

I think they are over reacting too....I know that there is a chance for it to happen, but month after month of feeling blue is not good either....and to not give it on the CHANCE it could happen is not sound enough for me....I am going to give the upped dose of seroquel at night a chance as the doc said that is has mood stabilizing ability too. I talked to her about Lamictal and she said I could not take it with the Tegretol it would have to be instead, as the two interact bad. I will see her in a month and will keep trying...I really need something soon....
