I hope that with what I have lived through in those years, will be able to help all those who are just now going through. It is important to understand that even after 44 yrs, I am continuing to recover and to evolve. I just hope I can help others." (scotty04901)

The Unquiet Mind. Very interesting book about a psychiatrist who is actually bipolar. At the end, I actually wrote her with a thank you note.

These are the two books my Psychiatrist will allow me to read for reasons of her own. One is Bipolar Disorder Demystified and Mastering The Tightrope of Manic Depression by Lana R.Castle. I walked by the leader of the DBSA when we were going and he highly recommended Taming Bipolar Disorder by Lori Oliwenstein. Did you know that there is a book called Dummies for Bipolar? When I was diagnosed I bought so many books and it seemed that every one written had their way of thinking. So I have them packed away. I also have the book Patty Duke wrote and the one that finally convinced me I was Bipolar. I saw a special with Jane Pauley talking about her Bipolar and every thing she said I could associate with. One thing she said and it was about depression. If she were dying of thirst and there was a big glass of ice water across the room she did not have the ability to get up and get it. I pick up the books and read them occcasionally and intend to get the ones you suggested. So thanks for the ones you think are are benifical.

The BEST book, hands down, is "Break The Bipolar Cycle, A Day-By-Day Guide To Living With Bipolar Disorder" by Elizabeth Brondolo, Ph.D., and Xazier Amador, Ph.D. I could not put this book down. I read it in two days. It is written in layman's terms. I have read many books, but this is, by far, the best I have ever read. I highy reccommend this book.

HC I didn't like that one. I couldn't get into it, but I finished it.

The best suggestion I would have is go to the book store and flip through the book and see if you like the writer's style. Then you can either buy it or ask your library to bring it in if they don't have it.

I have a particular writing style I like, so my picks are based on that. Beth

Did any of you wonder if reading all different books might make us too depressed? Especally as every one is different. We are seing ourselves regardless of the book and I got really burned out on reading how bad it can be. Just a thought. We live it, we know about it, I really don't read much about it. We are all different. We all have different body chemistries, the medication is all diverse and what works for one won't work for another. I actually think I might need a medication change but am actually scared to even try.

Dean, that could definitelyy be an issue. For me how I've dealt with issues that have troubled me I read up on them. The way it helps me is knowledge is power. However there is a fine line between educating oneself and being obsessed. According to my therapist and psychiatrist I'm being healthy about it and for me the depression is triggered chemically, or by past childhood issues or current events. The subject of BP doesn't depress me.

My mom has been diagnosed since I was 3 and when I had asked her to bring me books on BP while hospitalized and recently diagnosed she couldn't understand why. Her thoughts are was she had an illness, the doctor diagnosed her and now she takes meds. Don't ask questions just follow the doctor's orders. That's not me. Beth
