I'm applying for disabilty for the first time. I've been diagnosed BP in 91 but suffered swings and deadly depressions as early as 86. I'm now 46 and can no longer provide a home and income for myself and my 16 yr old.

Anyone who's been through disability and lost or won, please write back.

I'm scared and I'm having to make great adjustments in my self perception since I can no longer hold a job that pays enough to cover normal expenses. After 20+ years of meds to keep me sane and alive, I'm suffering the side effects of lost cognitive ability, poor short term memory, inability to multi task; basically all the skills that kept me employable. I am worried that I won't be able to convey this clearly enough since I sound and look like an educated person. My therapist tells me to stress how I've always been able "to present well" and that denial has kept me from facing these issues earlier ;to focus on what I've not been able to do or no longer can. She also reminds me that losing my home, my job, job hunting, havnig to get a new car and dealng with an emotional teen all in one year are all high stress situations for any average single parent but to have a mental illness on top of everything else would put most people beyond the brink. Please reply if you're on disablty or have applied. thx p

hi ppalmer,

I have recently applied for ssd and I would suggest you try the attorneys at Allsup or Alsup. They are great! They take care of all the paperwork that social security sends to you.

They also only get paid if you get ssd.

I have to tell you though, even though I filed in March it could be as early as Sept. 2008 or as late as March 2009 before I could recieve my first check. I'm only 37 so my checks would not be very much anyway. I have put all that on hold for now cause with my bp I felt like a failure for not working and have taken a new job just last week. The first week was good but so far this week I have had crying spells and multiple anxiety attacks everyday. I even left early today cause I couldn't take it anymore.

I just wanted you to know that I think it depends on the severity of your disorder as to how fast you may be paid.

The paperwork was horrendous that the social security people sent me so I would check into a company that can help you apply for you ssd if you haven't already.

I wish you the best and hope you get approved soon. I can't imagine having a teenager and having bp like you have described.

all the best and have a good night....paint

The voice inside my head doesn't like you either!

My journey to the grave will not be with an attractive well preserved body, I will skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand and wine in the other totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO WHAT A RIDE"

Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures.
Remember, when someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in you face to frown.
BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and bitch-slap that mother@#?!&! upside the head....ha ha

You have to love it.Cause you know we've all thought it.

Hi PPalmer, First of all I want to say that I do understand what you are going through. I raised two children as a single mom, I stuggled for years going from one job to another because of my BP. I am now 43 and I have also applied for SSDI because keeping a job has been so difficult. The reality of this process is harsh. I have been denied once which promted me to get an attorney and now I have been waiting almost a year for my hearing. One good thing is that my attoney would not have taken my case if he didn't think I would win. I would suggest to you and anyone who is applying to hire an attorney. It is a real battle trying to do it alone. Good Luck and I mean that sincerely. I am in the same boat. Jeanne

Hi PPalmer,

I have filed for SSDI, and have been waiting for my hearing. I have been denied 2 times. They usually deny you the first time.

I filed right after I got diagnosed 14 mos ago, and later looked at my job history, and was thankful, that, I did file, because my job history was a wreck. I am 37, and have 4 kids. I went through the whole process of feeling like a cop out, and embarrassed, and afraid of not being able to support my family, too. This last year has been rough. My S/O was sick for 16mos, and I crashe around the same time he got sick. So both of us couldn't work, and we had to live on my child support, and charities all that time. He is now back to work, thank god. So if we made it through you can, too.

I have a lawyer, too, and it is so nice having help.

Hang in there, we are here for you.

God Bless,Gypsy

HI PPALMER1 I UDERSTAND THE FEELINGS OF HAVING TO RELOOK AT YOURSELF IN A NEW LIGHT. IT IS HARD BUT BEING BRUTALLY HONEST WITH YOURSELF HELPS ALOT. AS FAR AS THE INCOME AND APPLYING GOES I WOULD SUGGEST ASKING IF HAVING YOUR DOCTOR AR COUNCILER BE PRESENT OR IF WRITING AN AFDIDAVITE WOULD HELP. ALSO IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HOSPITALIZED IT HELPS TO STRESS THAT AND TO KNOW AS MUCH DETAIL AS YOU CAN ABOUT IT. JUST TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T WORRY. YOU'LL BE FINE. THEY NORMALLY REJECT YOU THE FIRST TIME AS OTHERS HAVE SAID. YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IT A DAY AT A TIME. I HAVEN'T BEEN THROUGH IT PERSONALLY BUT I HELPED A FRIEND FIGHT AND WIN HERS FOR BP.
Its a long hard road we walk in life
In the end its worth the worry and strife
For when I go and I am judged by God
I will know why things were often odd.

I struggle yet now to survive each day
I pray to God He'll guide my way.

thanks so much for your info and support. I have a "review" with a neuropsychologist this Tuesday -assigned by disability, then I'll look into getting a lawyer. Good luck to you and yours. p

thanks so much for your support. Is there anyway you can give my email or this site to your friend that got SSDI so I can get more first hand knowledge?
