I am brand new to this sight and I've recently been diagnosed with Bipolar (don't know the difference between 1 & 2)and have only been on medication since April (Risperdol 1st and Zyprexa since Friday)What scared me was the "flat line" I felt one day and I'm worried things won't be beautiful or funny to me anymore. Please help as I've also had very scary but thankfully passing thoughts of suicide.

Hey Colleen...my son is 26 and he has been on Zyprexa and Prozac for 7 mos after a bad episode...he is fine...but, it took about 6 weeks for his sense of humor to return. And about 3 mos before the symptoms of bipolar were better...there was a gradual improvement each day...

He is better than he was before the meds and we are so much more confident that there won't be another bad episode. He was diagnosed when he was 14...when he is on meds he is fine. We tried it without meds and it was a disaster..he got really manic in Nov...

With meds he works, plays golf, goes out with friends, and has a normal productive life...

If you felt thoughts of suicide tell the doctor asap...and don't hesitate to go to the emergency room or call someone to come stay with you if you feel like that.

We are here for you...hugs,

Hi colleen. The advice I give to everyone about suicide is that it is a permanent solution to a temporary problem....Like Norma said, make sure you tell your pdoc about it. Sometimes, especially when new medications are introduced, they can make the depression worse. That has certianly been my g/f's experience. So when those meds throw you for a loop, come in here and talk about it. This is a great place full of wonderful supportive people. We are all here for you.

Welcome Colleen, we're glad you're here. I can't urge you strongly enough that if you're getting those thoughts then don't wait to talk to your psych...call asap. If for some reason you've been diagnosed incorrectly then please know that drugs prescribed for BP are hazardous if it's just depression and meds prescribed for depression can be bad for a BP. I'm Type 2, but don't have any manic episodes so I was originally diagnosed as just depressed and went on depression meds and after a week almost blew my brains out because I was BP. Most of the times it takes some experimenting for the psych to determine exactly what you are so don't wait because those thots can get more powerful than your resistance if the meds are wrong for you.

Let us know how you're doing.

Hi Colleen..I was worried about the flat line feeling when I first started taking meds. Talk to your doc about the suicide thoughts and the flat line feeling so your meds can be adjusted. Don't get discouraged if it takes awhile to get the meds right. It can be a long process but well worth it! Hugs
