If this stint in the Cuckoo's Nest doesn't pan out, we're considering ECT. Anyone ever done it? His pdoc says he's seen good success for both the high and low episodes and getting a BP stabilized. There can be some short term memory loss (but that may be a good thing at this point).

Thanks for any info!

Hi,

What is ECT? I have never heard of this treatment and am curious about it.

This will give you the basic info... http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/bipolar/treatment/ ect_2.asp

and this is from the NIMH: In situations where medication, psychosocial treatment, and the combination of these interventions prove ineffective, or work too slowly to relieve severe symptoms such as psychosis or suicidality, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be considered. ECT may also be considered to treat acute episodes when medical conditions, including pregnancy, make the use of medications too risky. ECT is a highly effective treatment for severe depressive, manic, and/or mixed episodes. The possibility of long-lasting memory problems, although a concern in the past, has been significantly reduced with modern ECT techniques. However, the potential benefits and risks of ECT, and of available alternative interventions, should be carefully reviewed and discussed with individuals considering this treatment and, where appropriate, with family or friends.

I'd like an update on this as well. My research shows that it is not harmful or painful. I'd really like to know more about it, including places where one can receive the procedure. My pdoc does not do it.

After my suicide attempt 2 years ago, my family wanted me to have an ECT, but my husband refused. I did some research and I think it was about 50-50 good and bad. I do know, from my research, that it is no longer like "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Personally I am happy I didn't have it done. Just puttin' my 2 cents in.

My husband had 15 ECT treatments last fall. It has been an up and down year with his moods all over the place. The ECT was ROUGH. Both physically for him and mentally for both of us. It seemed to help SHORT term, like for a day or two at a time, but long term, I don't think it did anything except mess up his short term memories. I did talk to some of the other patients there and some had really good outcomes with it. I would not discourage it, but it didn't do much for my husband. Hope that helps.

If any more questions about it, feel free to PM

T.
