MDJunction to me

ThereseML"When I first came to MDJ, I was in need of peer support in dealing with issues of my childhood abuse. I was moving away from the painful issues and trying to find an uplifting group of people to help me transition to a thriver in my life. I found that here. I also found a group of peers with Fibromyalgia and found the same uplifting experience there. My computer crashed and it was a while before I found my way back, this time with issues related to Parkinson's Disease. I had tried a few other support sites before reminding myself of MDJ. On those, I never got a reply. I finally found my way back here and again found very supportive, caring and inspiring people who made me feel like I was 'back home'. Indeed I am." (ThereseML)

My almost 13 year old son has been being treated for mood/ bipolar disorder for almost a year now. He has been treated for ADHD since 1rst grade, he has been on concerta for the most part we did try adderal but that was a disaster, he became suicidal so back on concerta he went, flash forward to half way through Junior high 6th grade now we have rage episodes breaking his glasses getting suspended calling my cell crying to come get him every day. I started him seeing a therapist and psychiatrist started changing his meds he was still having many problems feeling over whelmed. Start of 7th grade still outburst then the calls started again he spent more time in the office than he did in class. I asked for the school to see if there was a slot avable at the day treatment progam school. so as of Thanksgiving of this past year my son goes to a school where they are trained to deal with mental health issues. while this is a great place for him he has lost many of his friends and now i am at a loss as how to help him, his new school he only has 10 kids in a class some kids will graduate from this school while others can work to streamline back to their base school. well thats our story if you read this far thank you

As a mom to an almost 23 yr old,I know exactly what you are going through. My son was dx at 7 yrs old.It took a bit of time to find the correct cocktail that works for him.I say cocktail cause hes on 7 meds.

10:1, the new school will probably help. There will be less people to stress him out and he will most likely get more.

I am thankful for the schools my son went to.He was in a specialized school in 1st grade and he got his actual diploma.I think if he had been in the public school, he would of quit school or just given up totally.

I don't know ifyou attend a support group, if not,I'd recommend it.Even though my son is no longer in school, I still attend the one I have for yrs.Its nice help the other moms with info and they can see theres hope in getting their children through school. Please know we are here to help any way we can.

Welcome to the group, 4bing.

Does the number of his friends really matter so much? It might, I am just asking. Some of us (like me, and I am not bipolar) have a few close friends rather than a lot of moderately close friends.

I am sure that you help him every day. Some things he might need to hear more often than a child without a mental illness: I love you. You are special to me. You have extraordinary talents (you should be able to talk about these!) that should be nurtured.

4bing, you might look into joining Parents of Bipolar Children here at MDJ. You would find other parents who are going through your same situation there.

All of my advice is based on experience and reading. I am not a medical doctor, and have never even played one on TV.
