Hi,

My name is Brett. I have been married to my husband for 19 years and he has bipolar. We are working through some issues right now as he has been on a medical leave from work for the past few months. I am glad this is here!

Brett

Hi, Brett,

I have been married for 23 years to a wonderful man who has bipolar disorder. I already belong to the bipolar support group, which I have found to be very helpful. I like it because you get both perspectives. This one looks good too, though.

Has your husband always had bipolar? Mine showed no symptoms until Aug., 2006. He was hospitalized for a week with diverticulitus (an inflamed intestine). They gave him very strong antibiotics, some of which had a possible side effect of mental problems. When he came home, he went into an acute manic psychosis. He was hospitalized for two weeks, came home went into severe depression, and was hospitalized for another two weeks. So this has been going on for a little over a year now.

The doctors haven't treated it as true bipolar, because they feel it was a reaction to the antibiotics. Every time he has become stable, they have taken him off the meds., which has led to another episode.

He is sort of stable right now, though, and I think this time they plan to leave him on the medication. I know how hard it is when they are on medical leave from work. At least with my husband it was. They didn't pay him as much which made him stress about money. Also, being home with nothing really to do gave him too much time to think and worry.

Hoping to get some advice on how to deal with all this.

Terri

Hi Brett, I am new to this forum and married to a bipolar man. He was diagnosed 3 years ago. I don't think this marriage will make it to seven years. I am so drained. The verbal abuse and feeling hated is getting the best of me.

How do you deal with all of your feelings? I feel guilty because I know inside is a great guy.

Kathy

Hi Brett, glad you found this site. There are alot of good people here with lifetimes of experience both being bipolar and supporting someone with bipolar.

I'm RED. My wife of 25 years is bipolar, diagnosed 8 years ago. Stable for 1 year now, thank you God.

Brett & Kathy, I know that dealing with the moods is hard on us too. Sometimes we need to seek help for ourselves also, from time to time I also see a therapist, when things get rough for me. I have found many wonderful compassionate knowledgeable people on here to talk to, it helps alot. We have to do maintenance on ourselves too.

It is hard seeing how this disorder can manifest in the person we know and love. Just remember that it is the disorder coming through.

God Bless

RED
