How do you cope with the mood swings of someone you love so much, when they say and do such hurtful things?

You realize that it's part of an illness that needs to be treated. Tell us your story...
"Is this a blessing? Or is it a curse?
Does it get any better? Can it get any worse?
Will it go on forever? Is it over tonight?
Does it come with the darkness? Does it bring out the light?
Is it richer than diamonds? Or just a little cheaper than spit?"--Jim Steinham

WELL HOW DO YOU REACT TO IT??? DO YOU REACT WITH UNDERSTANDING? JUST GO UP AND GIVE THE PERSON A HUG OR JUST SAY...I LOVE YOU!!! A LOT OF TIMES WE DONT REALIZE WHAT WE SAY TIL THE HURT IS ALREADY SAID....BUT REMEMBER WE ARE REALLY HURTING INSIDE AND WHEN WE ARE IN THAT MOOD SWING WE SEE ONLY OUR PAIN AND SUFFERING AND REACT THE ONLY WAY WE KNOW HOW AT THE TIME A CRITICAL OUT BURST.REMEMBER IT IS AN ILLNESS AND IT TAKES TIME AND ENERGY FOR US TO WORK WITH OUR ILLNESS.BE PATIENT AND UNDERSTANDING WITH THE PERSON IF YOU LOVE THEM BE THERE WITH ALL YOUR HEART.REMEMBER THAT HIS MOOD SWING IS PART OF HIS ILLNESS.DURING THEM MOMENTS THINK OF THE GOOD HEART THIS PERSON HAS AND THE MOMENT YOU LL HAVE WHEN THIS PASSES. I KNOW I AM BIPOLAR AND GOT THE HURTFULNESS FROM OTHERS TOO. CERTAIN FAMILY MEMBERS INCLUDING 2 CHILDREN ARE BIPOLAR AND HAD HUSBAND AND SIGNIFICATE OTHERS WHO WERE TOO.THERE IS ALWAYS A BRIGHT SIDE AND HOPE THEY ARE GETTING THE HELP THEY NEED.

Well welcome tiapoulson. Glad you found us if you are new, and if not, I am Gloria. I am 58 and have had BPD (bipolar disorder), PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), amd COPD ( compulsive obsessive disorder), for as long as I can remember. All are nasty, mean, and hateful, disorders. However, you are in no way obligated to take verbal or any kind of abuse from your loved one with the disorders. You must lay down some rules that the person must not break. For example, (and these are from different posters, not just me) 1. if you break something during an episode it will not be mine. 2. if you cheat on me (if you are romanically involved) it's a deal breaker. 3. if you hit me, we are done. These are only examples, you know what your own points of contension are. As bipolar, I am not stupid and I still know right from wrong when I am having an episode. For my family, they all know, when to walk away from any kind of argument with me. After some self time, I am again able to tuck my brain tornado away and be civil once more. I wish you luck, don't forget that you must protect and love yourself. Don't let, YOU, get lost in someone elses mental disorder.

Gloria
