After reading all of the posts here I am learning so much about bipolar, to the point that I'm actually teaching my BP spouse some things. Anyway, I asked him is he was diagnosed with BPI or BPII and he said he didn't actually know. Could anyone tell me the difference? Are treatments different or just symptoms? Thanks so much for all of your advice and help.

Definitely do some research on this, there are resources online.. but usually Bipolar I is characterized by more manic episodes, whereas Bipolar II is mostly depression and hypomania (although mania can occur).

Sstephens: Is is my understanding that BPI is the classic type, with long periods of depression and long periods of mania (lasting six to 18 months). BPII are the rapid cyclers like my husband, who can turn in a matter of hours. Meds and treatment are the same. (When the first pdoc my husband got in the hospital after a suicide attempt told me that he was BPI, I said, "Yeah, and you don't live with him.)
